George Inn, Mitcheldean (General)

by slowhands @, proud of his ancient Dean Forest roots, Thursday, August 30, 2012, 07:21 (4464 days ago) @ adlinferris

Just found my g,g,grandfather, George Carpenter on the 1911 census, Living at Old George, Mitcheldean.
I've looked at a map of Mitcheldean and cannot find a street named Old George.
Could Old George be the name of an old inn or maybe a house or cottage?

Thankyou.
Linda

East of the Cross a tall gabled house, possibly that called the New House in 1609 (fn. 83)
was known as the Dunstone later in the century. (fn. 84) By 1740 it had ] become the George inn. (fn. 85)
The top part of the building, including the gables, was removed in 1947.
