Robins/Robbins family Newent (General)

by Eagerbega @, Saturday, September 01, 2012, 05:20 (4462 days ago)

Need Help with finding information on the following listed family (listed on IGI). May great great grandfather William Charles Robbins married a Johanna Elizabeth Mack in St. Paul's Bristol in 1825 On the marriage certificate of William and Johanna the witnesses were Hannah Robbins and Henry Robbins. Their two sons William Charles and John Curran Philpot Robbins were baptised there also. They came out to Australia in 1833. Have searched many indexes to find his family.......researcher tells me they are not listed in the Bristol church registers and appears William came from somewhere else. He was a stonemason/bricklayer and could not write his name when he was married. As Newent is not very far from Bristol it seems that this family could be connected.
On the death certificate of William Charles Robbins (in Australia....his father's occupation is listed as Farmer the mother's name is not mentioned). The date of birth for the William listed below is about the right time for our William Charles Robbins. Perhaps there are others that are descendants of some of the family below.
Be grateful for any help available or ideas. Thanks Eagerbega.

ROBINS/ROBBINS family Newent

Dear Slowhands,
Thank you for reply. I have only just joined and am still learning to navigate the site.
I found my Robbins family last year on the LDS IGI. and I saw this Newent Robbins family on there, however although Henry, Hannah and Charles are family names....I couldn't establish link. I had intended to ask the Bristol researcher to see if they were connected but hadn't. A cousin in Australia also has contacted a researcher and found the Bristol lot and her researcher seems to think these Newent Robins are ours. I am not sure what proof they have. So I decided to see if I could see if there is a connection. Of course would be great if there were.
Will certainly have a look through the records and see what shows up. I am hoping someone down one of the other lines in this family may see my post. Eagerbega.

'researcher tells me they are not listed in Bristol church records'

I also used a researcher looking at Bristol records of family from St George - who told me people came from surrounding areas to work and marry in Bristol.

Was your William Charles ROBBINS' marriage to Johanna Elizabeth MACK at St Pauls, Bristol in 1825 - (Henry & Hannah ROBBINS witnesses) - the only ROBBINS and MACK marriage for (give or take say 5 years?) and did any of the above couples, witness any other marriages at St Paul's Bristol? (trying to form family groups).

Professions can go through generation after generation - including Masons.....

for example....

1861 Census, Bristol & St Jacob

there is a family of ROBBINS who the head is also a Stonemason.

Jno ROBBINS - age 31 - Mason, born Gloucester St George (a parish of Bristol)
with wife Eliza age 30 - born at Glos. Bitton - and 3 children, Eliza John and Aaron.

-----

One would also assume with the names of the two children of William & Johanna - William Charles and John Curran Philpot ROBBINS - these carry family christian names and surnames in the case of John.

Robins/Robbins Surname Trivia

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Sunday, September 02, 2012, 22:49 (4460 days ago) @ m p griffiths

All this talk of Robins and Bristol reminded me that one of the city's football teams is nicknamed the Robins, I wondered if there was a local Mr Robins or somesuch involved with their early history ?.
HOWEVER, my best efforts suggest Bristol City FC, formed in 1897, are simply called this as they have always worn red shirts. On occasions the official club crest has included a Robin redbreast perched beneath the Clifton suspension bridge, although sadly this tradition seems out of favour in these more commercially-minded days.

HOWEVER I do see that the surname Robins or even more strikingly Robbins are very much geographically associated with the Bristol/West Country area, as the Census's show, see below. So if nothing else it seems no surprise Robins families in relatively nearby Newent could or would have Bristol connections.

Thank you for your reply cjk and others. Yes we found those entries in St. Paul's Bristol. They are our ancestors. In Australia we had thought because of Certificates here that Johanna was either a McCauliffe or Graham. Interesting that her surname is Mack........but may have been shortened some years earlier. She has signed her marriage cert as Mack. My researcher in Bristol could find no other entries

This paragraph from my researcher in Bristol
(There is no MACK baptism registered in Bristol's parish churches 1754-1812. In the period 1780 - 1800 there were three "William ROBBINS" entries but none with father Charles. In any case there was not much scope for farming in central Bristol. The parishes of St. James and St. Paul were close to the city boundary and adjoining less built-up areas but these were devoted to market gardens and nurseries rather than traditional farming. These areas were also in process of being built up which might explain William's presence there.)

cjk......regarding the second sons name.........on Philpot's (as he was known in Australia) wife Margarets Obituary it states that her husband was named in cognizance (respect of) a relative on the maternal side of the Robbins family (meaning Johanna)..namely John Philpot Curran the Irish Orator, lawyer etc. I spent months/years researching John Philpot Curran and family. JPC's sister married a Garret Graham and had offspring, there is heaps on the net etc.and I have contacts linked to the Curran line. John Philpot Currans father James Curran was sent to Newmarket Cork as Seneshal of the town/seat....which was originally the home of the McAuliffe Clan. Irish records are scant and a lot burnt in the 1922 fire in Dublin.

Thanks for your reply mp. All very helpful.

Have had contact with a lady from genesreunited............I contacted her as she has a Giles Robins in her husbands family tree.

Her earliest entry is.

1, GILES ROBINS married a LOUISA. nothing more known.

GILES ROBINS and LOUISA had a son THOMAS - baptism 6th October 1833 at St. James Bristol.

THOMAS ROBINS married ELIZA SMITH (no date).

THOMAS ROBINS and ELIZA had a son HENRY THOMAS ROBINS baptised 14th December 1854

(no need to go further) I am interested in details up to 1833.

In the Newent records there is a Giles Robins parents Giles and Susanna......and there is also a Charles and a William with same parents.

I was wondering if the Giles above is the same as the one in Newent.....or is this a common name in these parts. I should think that the one above would be the Giles born in 1807 ....grandson of Giles and Susanna.
