Reverend John Wotton PENGELLY,1884-1898,Alyburton (General)
Looking
for information on John Wotton Pengelly in the period 1884-1898 when he
lived and died in the Forest of Dean.
Born 1813 in Stonehouse,Plymouth
I have all his Census records and his marriage to Sarah
Couperthwaite, his 30+ years with the church in Blackburn Lancs, all
pretty ordinary then it starts to get a bit more interesting ,the death
of his wife ,resigning the ministry ,marrying his Housekeeper Ellen
Wheal who was 31 years younger than him in Worcester in 1884 and moving
to Sandford House ,Aylburton.
I thought he had "retired" but it seems not, he is listed as the curate
in charge at a wedding in 1884 at Alvington, which I spotted on a Google
search for him,but when I search on here I don't come up with him at
all.Am I putting in the wrong terms?,or are the records not
transcribed?did he do more services? Was he the vicar?,was Sandford house
the vicarage?
There is a transcript of his will out there somewhere I have the
details ,but can I find it again ,tried all different search terms but
too no avail.
Can anybody shed any light on his last 14 years?. Any help greatly
appreciated.
Thanks JWP

Chris
Thanks for that ,and so quick as well.
That is the only proof I have found that shows John Wotton PENGELLY is related to the rest of the family mentioned as beneficares,I had seen it somewhere else then could'nt find it again which was driving me mad .
Going back over my notes I found the marriage he conducted in Alvington was in 1884 between Emily Martin and Charles Wait which I saw on somebody on here's post .It would seem that the officiating Vicar is not a searchable term and is why I cannot find when he was working.

Yes I had seen the National Probate Calendar on Ancestry, but it is only really a calendar and it will not show any of the beneficaries the family members, with their relationships which provides the magic link between people you did'nt know were related.
He was just a possible member of the family with nothing to connect him with the rest until I saw the extended will with the names and their relationships of the beneficaries and they all tallied, Bingo a new Great Great Uncle.

If you search the Wills Index using the will no - 02915 you will find details of 16 beneficaries.
Rev Pengelly did 8 weddings at Alvington in 1884/1885/1886.
Searched on the Parish records on this site.
Hope this is of help.

Searching this site's PRs for Church Ministers

Hi Peter,
your reply intrigues me, please can you advise how you searched the PRs for Ministers ?. As per JWP's post I have tried and failed to use the normally excellent Advanced Search, did you use a cunning plan or did you flog thro all the hundreds of Alvington PRs individually. Awaiting your reply, please, with eager anticipation.
Hi JWP,
I wonder if contacting St Andrew's Church direct may help answer your query ? Not sure which, if either, of these sites contains the correct contact details but may be worth an email ?.

Gloster Archives may be of use, see these results from The National Archives website, if you click the red "Glos Archives" heading it will lead you to their contact details:

Heres a detailed history of the Church altho' sadly no mention of Rev Pengelly

Hi Jeff,
I used the basic PRS (not the APRS) by entering %,Alvington,1884/5/6 and marriage.By looking at these few records you find that Rev Pengelly was in office there from early 1884 to late 1886. You can do the same type of search for baptisms and burials - all rather slow! You could use the same process in the Advanced Search I believe.

Thanks go out to MP.Peter,Jeff
MP -Thanks for the heads up on the will ordering,I will look into getting a copy of it.
Peter-Thanks for looking through the records of marriages,I did find the ones you mentioned and then went onto search the baptisms of which he conducted 28 in 1884/5/6,the Alvington burials don't seem to be on there, did I read somewhere they are photocopied and not on fiche?
Jeff-Thanks for the info on the church and archives. And it was not too daunting to find the officiating vicar using the advanced search, although it did help that Alvington was the second parish? listed ,once I had increased the entries to the 100 per page it is easier to get the year you are looking for and click on to open to reveal the details.
One interesting thing it did show was the first time he officiated was a baptism on the 2nd of March 1884 which would have been 2/3 months before he got married to his much younger housekeeper in Worcester 1884 amj,I do hope he was'nt living in sin in the vicarage during that time.

If you are interested I have a short article which was published in a magazine about Sandford House. There is a photograph of Rev.JWP, another showing both Ellen and Sarah with a groom and one of the house taken in 1888.The photo with the ladies is not too clear.
It states that JWP was at St Andrews 1884-1886.
I am related to the Taylors who lived there.
If you contact me I will email the article to you.

I would be very grateful for any information on Sandford House. I am the current owner and would like to know about previous owners and their history.
I have engravings on window panes by a Lillian Wall and 'Rudge' and also by Scott-Garrett who rented the house for a while.
I would love to know about the Taylors and any photographs/articles you may have?
Best wishes,
S

Reverend John Wotton PENGELLY - PROBATE
by John Lawrence Wickson , Tuesday, January 23, 2018, 17:12 (2491 days ago) @ m p griffiths
The Pengellys were tenants of Thomas Taylor who moved to Court End, Alvington. His widow inherited Sandford House at Aylburton after his death in 1905. Annie (Lawrence) Taylor of Myrtle Cottage, Alvington left Sandford House, Aylburton to her daughter Jane Mills at her death in 1937. Jane had tha Archaeologist Scott-Garrett and family at Sandford until her death at Aylburton in 1958. The House then passedTo Pat and Sandy Wickson who moved into Sandford House in 1961. The Wickson’s sold Sandford House in 1979 after 100 years + of family ownership (Taylor-Mills-Wickson).
A footnote. The Forest of Dean History Society has a ‘ScottGarrett annual prize ‘ for FOD research.Nobody with the name of Wickson is allowed to receive this prize owing to SG’s removal from his tenancy at Sandford in 1961. He moved to a retirement home in Ross on Wye. Wickson (RAF Officer) had needed a home for his wife and children and exercised his right as owner to move SG on from his tenancy.

Hello
Could you please thank your husband for taking the time and trouble to give us a tour of your wonderful house and grounds much appreciated. It made our day.
If you read back through the other posts on this topic it will give you some more of the details about my GG Uncle which I was able to find out through this wonderful site.
One of the contributors is related to the family Taylor ? who owned Sandford House and leased it to the Rev John Wotton Pengelly ,it might be worth contacting her as I think I got the photos from her and she may have more information on when and who lived there.
Cannot remember if there was another thread on JWP ,but somebody came up with two snippets from the local paper about Tramps twice being sent to prison for 7 days for scrumping apples from "your" apple trees!
I will take up your suggestion and try and get in contact with the Rev Tony Jones.
I will drop you a line when I know more
Paul
