Stephen EVANS and Harriett FROWN from English Bicknor (General)

by celticmagick @, Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 07:32 (4381 days ago)

Hi all,

I have searched all the parish records on this site and the census's for a child of Stephen Evans and Harriett Frowen.

Stephen and Harriett were married in English Bicknor on the 11th of May 1833.
Stephen was convicted and transported to Tasmania Australia later that same year.

On his convict records he states that he has a wife Harriett and a child at Ledbrook at the time 1833-1834.

I have found a child named Susanna who Harriett gave birth to in 1837 so it is impossible that she is the child. On her birth record it states that Harriett is the wife of Stephen who has been transported and the fathers name is blank.

I have been unable to find the death of this missing child also.

I am hoping someone can help me locate Stephens child that was left behind with Harriett.

Stephen Evans is my great great grandfather.

regards
Mary in Australia

thank you for all that information. I will take my time digesting it all with the other info I have.

Still the missing child of Stephen and Harriett.

Poor Harriett, what a hard time she must have had after Stephens transportation.

Luckily it seems that Susan looked after her after her marriage to Richard Addis.

Stephen Evans went on to have a good life in Australia after his freedom was granted.

Stealing a sheep! to obviously feed a hungry family and what a consequence for them with Harriett left destitute.

Thank you again for the info. If anyone locates the missing baby it would be fantastic. I am wondering now whether she had to leave it with a family member as
she had no means to look after it or more than likely it has died.

kindest regards

Hi there, My name is Charlie Jones and I'm a descendant of Harriet, my father is Nicholas Jones who's mother is Winifred Hilda Jones, who's mother was Augusta Elizabeth Addis I'm not sure where it goes from there, I think there's two more generations between? But my dad has done alot of family tree research so I'll call him and find out what else he knows!
Speak to you soon hopefully :)

Hi,
I am happy to hear from you.
I am early in my research of Harriett Frowen and Stephen Evans.
I am in Australia and a direct descendant of Stephen.
He was our elusive convict that it has taken years to confirm
his origins and it is now established that Harriett was his first wife
There is a missing child of theirs that was left behind with Harriett.
I am very interested in any descendants of Harriett as I am building
her tree also.
I will send you what I can find and see where you fit it.
Look forward to hearing back from you
regards

Hi Charles

I corresponded with your dad in 2006 and we met up in English Bicknor. Is he still doing family history research? I have a researcher on the Frowen family who is interested in getting in touch. His name is Phil Moon and his is from the UK.

Hi Mary. I'm sorry this reply has been a while coming! My daughter did text me but after reading the text it slipped my mind and I've only just remembered!
As Charlie has said Harriet Frowen was my Great Great Great Grandmother. I have done some research but I haven't had a great deal of success. I have also drawn a blank on any children born to Harriet before 1837 although my mother can remember an Aunt Kate who she thinks was the daughter of Mary Anne Evans who in turn she believed was Harriet's daughter. I believe that a Thomas Jarrett may be the father of some of Harriet's children.
So far, although I am by no means certain, it would appear that Harriet's children may be Susannah, Harriet, William, Elizabeth, Mary Anne,Angelina & a 2nd William who appears to have been born in December 1859, Christened in January 1860 & buried 23/4/1860. My link to Harriet is through her daughter Susannah Evans (18/3/1837 - 13/2/1932) who married Richard Addis. Their daughter was Sarah Anne Addis. Before she eventually married a Mr Preece/Preest? she had a daughter (my Grandmother) Augusta Elizabeth Addis (28/6/1877 - 8/7/1939).
Augusta was raised by Susannah as at the time her mother Sarah Anne was unmarried. Augusta married Henry Jones and went on to have ten children. The eldest of which was Avis Augusta and the youngest Winifred Hilda (my mother).
If you can find a copy, there is a book titled The Forest of Dean Revisited by Joyce Latham. (Printed by Sutton Publishing Limited, Phoenix Mill, Stroud Gloucestershire). On page 102 there is a photograph of Harriet, Susannah, Sarah, Augusta and my Aunt Avis - five generations! Avis was born in 1896 which I believe was the year that Stephen passed away.
I hope this is of interest and if I can help with more information please let me know. (One more thing which you may know already - I think Stephen may have had a twin brother Joseph. Their parents were George Evans and Mary Bevan. George and Mary were married at English Bicknor 27th May 1794. Both were born in English Bicknor - George in 1772 & Mary in 1768) Harriet is buried with her daughter Susannah and Richard Addis just to the left of the main doorway of English Bicknor Church.
Kind Regards Nick

Good evening Millie, welcome to the forum.

Please can I recommend you read these "Must read before posting" notes, see here
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=9711

They strongly advise against including personal email addresses within a post - this advice is for your own security as unfortunately there are a great many people around the world who routinely gather such addresses to use for criminal purposes, sending spam email and potentially spreading viruses etc etc. This forum is a public one so easily read by all. If you feel you must leave your email address on your post then I suggest you retype it using "AT" or similar instead of the "@"character, altho I believe modern automated email-searching software as used by criminals can see past this. To edit your post just hit the edit button at bottom right.

Re contacting other forum members, if you click on their blue username you can then send them private & secure messages via the forum. This has the advantage it goes directly into their email inbox, so will probably be seen without them having to access the foum website first. Clciking on the blue username also shows their activity on the forum; in Mary's case she's not been active since 2013, altho her account is still shown as live by the way it's displayed in blue not black. Hopefully this means she will eventually see your post, but if I were you I'd also send her a private direct mail by clicking the blue envelope icon next to her name.

Hope this helps and good luck, Jeff.

Hi Mary

Stephen Evans is also my husband's great great grandfather. Don is descended from his daughter Alice and then her daughter Amy. How are you related?

I have also searched over the years for any clue on the child Stephen left behind.
