Cox of Viney Hill, Yorkley Slade, Lydney, Monmouth (General)

by banalban @, Sunday, November 25, 2012, 23:44 (4376 days ago)

My grandfather, Charles Maynard Cox, immigrated to the US during the 1920's. I am attempting to find information on his father, Albert Edward Cox, born 1863 in either West Dean or Monmouth, died 1935-1936 in Hartpury. Albert's possible parents, John Cox and Hannah M. Lambert; born 1829 in Lydney and 1832 in Hartpury, respectively.
I have visited the Forest and have cousins in the area, but they've been unable to relate or verify that John and Hannah were my gg-grandparents. Would dearly love to hear from anyone researching the family. Related names are Partridge and Jones.
Many thanks!

Nan in the US.

Dear Nan

your grandfather was my Uncle Charlie. I am Albert Cox's daughter. I can't tell you anything about your great great grandparents, but I just about remember your great grandparents, that is, Charlie's father and mother. I think I have a photo of them somewhere. Your grandfather and grandmother, Auntie Nina, came to visit England and my parents in the 1950s. My father gave them a silver-topped walking stick that had belonged to his grandfather. Do you still have it?

One of Charlie's sisters, my Auntie Nan, went to live in Hartpury, so there might be a family connection there.

I live in London, I'm an academic historian. My email address is: rosieljai AT clara.co.uk

with kind regards

(Dr) Rosie Llewellyn-Jones
