Address searching the censuses found no reference to New Street, Newent in the 1881 and 1911 censuses, but it is listed in 1891 and 1901. In the 1901 census reference is made only to New Street. In 1891 there are two useful reference points in New Street - Station Terrace and Newent Court Lodge. So an address Station Terrace would indicate that it was near the railway station on the north side of the town, and Newent Court Lodge was demolished when the Newent bypass was built, so again on the north side of the town.

"Newent Past and Present", two maps published by David Bick in 1989, has a plan of Newent in 1902, and this has New Street between Lewell Street andHigh Street. New Street is directly opposite the old rectory building.

I was brought up in Newent from 1947 and maintained my contact until 2001. Although I remember High Street and Lewall Street I cannot recall any references to a New Street. Nevertheless it is there on the 1921 Ordnance Survey Map and located exactly as described in a previous post - opposite the old Rectory (later the Library and Council Offices) and beginning round about the junction of the main road with Watery Lane. I must have walked along it hundreds of times but never realised.

And this is a link to a picture of it. It runs on to the High Street with the Newent Workhouse (later the Grammar School)visible at the end of it.
