Gundy family Whitchurch/Tretire/Dixton Newton (General)

by ivorglyn @, Tuesday, January 08, 2013, 15:51 (4332 days ago)

Dear all I am trying to find a John Gundy/Grundy who married an Elizabeth in any of these locations(or possibly in Monmouth).

We believe that John Gundy b.~1788 was a child of Walter Gundy and Betty(Elizabeth) Davis/Davies.

John Gundy and Elizabeth had 2 children..1)Joseph Gundy b.1816 who married Susannah Parry on 7/feb/1836 in Dixton..2)John Gundy b.~1818 Newton Dixton who married Sarah Ann Jones on 25/august/1840.

Susannah Parry's parents were Elizabeth Gwynne and William Parry.Susannah was born ~1814.

If anyone out there has any relevant records I would be very grateful..Ivorglyn

Dear slowhands,Thankyou for all the info.I seem to remember, in one of Mike John's records,that there was a possible marriage between a John Gundy and an Elizabeth ~1805 in Monmouth but I am sure that you are aware that all of these records haven't been completed on the mongenes(Monmouthshire FHS) website.I am fairly sure that we have this line going back to about 1704 so if anyone wants these records just contact me..regards Ivor Morgan.Joseph Gundy b.~1816 Newton Dixton was my gg grandfather.

Hi Ivor,
There were a few Walter Gundys around the UK at that time, but sadly neither FindMyPast nor FamilySearch seems to know your Walter's parents, altho they have baptisms for Walter & Betty/Elizabeth's children which I suspect you already have.

FindMyPast also has the following transcribed record that may be new to you,

First name(s) Walter
Last name Gundy
Apprentice year 1769
Livery company Gardener
Details Gundy John, son of Walter, Ross, Herefordshire, mason, to John Shelmandine, 11 Oct 1769, Gardeners' Company
Birth county Herefordshire
Birth country England
Record set London Apprenticeship Abstracts, 1442-1850
Category Education & work
Subcategory Apprentices
Collections from Great Britain

By the way, I think you've made an error wrt his Burial Record, I've made the same mistake myself more than once, it's 10 March 1826, see;

First name(s) Walter
Last name Gundy
Birth year 1759
Death year 1826
Age 67
Burial year 1826
Burial day 10
Burial month 3
Place Llangarron
Church description ST DEINST
Church denomination ANGLICAN
County Herefordshire
Country England
Record set National Burial Index For England & Wales
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
Subcategory Deaths & burials
Collections from Great Britain

Using FamilySearch to look for all "GUNDY" births in Herefordshire c1769ish, there appears to be two or even 3 distinct family groups.

1) Christenings in "Ross" for Catherine 1751, John 1754, Sarah 1756, Anne 1759, Hannah 1760, all to parents WALTER and Sarah Gundy.

Before that and also in "Ross" were Elisabeth 1731, Anne & Hester January 1736, Hannah 1740 and William 1743, all to parents Walter & Hannah Gundy.
(Another Walter, in Dymock in 1726, to parents Walter & Hannah Gundy).

2) Christenings in "Upton Bishop" for Ann 1744, Alice 1746, Elisabeth 1749, Mary 1752, Stephen 1754, John 1754, Sarah 1756, all to parents Stephen and Elisabeth Gundy.

---

APART from the much-later 1788 Marriage Record given by Slowhands in his earlier post, which sadly doesn't give clues to Walter's parents, altho it's likely that witnesses John & Thomas Davies are related to bride Elizabeth (father & brother, maybe ??); this is the ONLY marriage I can find for an earlier Walter Gundy from same general area and timescale as the above christening records;

Name Walter Gundy
Spouse's Name Hannah Wingod
Event Date 07 Feb 1725
Event Place Dymock,Gloucester,England

Based on the above, and circumstantial I know, but I suspect your Walter born 1759 was child to Walter and Sarah Gundy, probably in Ross.

Hopefully this link will still work for you too to get the full records, which I hope are of some help.
atb Jeff.

Hi again Ivor,
only a few hours before my free trial of the FindMyPast website ends, which includes access to the Old Newspapers, so thought I'd look up Walter Gundy. On it I find several mentions in the 1840s ands 1850s to a Walter Gundy in the Whitchurch area born abt 1800. I THINK this is him,

1841; Doward, Whitchurch, Monmouth, Herefordshire, England
First name(s) Last name Gender Age Birth year Birth place
Walter Gundey Male 40 1801 Lab. Herefordshire, England
Sarah Gundey Female 40 1801 Herefordshire, England

Ester Gundey Female 10 1831 Herefordshire, England
Mary Gundey Female 8 1833 Herefordshire, England
James Gundey Male 6 1835 Herefordshire, England

1851; 12, Doward, Whitchurch, Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales

Sarah Gundy Wife Married Female 51 1800 At Home Gloucestershire, England
Ester Gundy Daughter - Female 16 1835 At Home Herefordshire, England
Mary Gundy Daughter - Female 14 1837 At Home Herefordshire, England

i.e. family of Walter Gundy who married Sarah Clayton at Whitchurch in 1823.

One of their children is James born abt 1834;

I assume you already know this, but I mention it in case you didn't also know that in March 1852 the Hereford Times etc reported that Walter Gundy "aged 55" was found guilty of sheep stealing, and sentenced to transportation for 10 years, "his son James aged 15" was acquitted, despite them both being described as "most notorious characters"... and Walter having been convicted 10 years earlier for a similar offence. The papers mention that neither could read or write.

In March 1851 the papers report a Walter Gundy "aged 20" of Llangarren was sentenced to 2 months hard labour for stealing a neighbour's wheelbarrow; I presume this is a different man ?
Perhaps this one, James' elder brother, from this site's PRs;

Sadly, and unlike their partner BNA website, the FMP version doesn't allow easy text-copying of specific articles. The sites don't mention any of Walters earlier ancestors as far as I can find. I've downloaded a pdf file of the main article in case you'd like it, or you can join the BNA site for a month giving you unlimited downloads for a reasonable charge, in fact the first few downloads for new members are free.

Hoping this was of interest, atb Jeff

Dear Jeff,Thankyou for all of this.The apprenticeship and the sheep stealing were very interesting.
I believe that Walter b.~1759 is likely to have had parents Walter and Sarah(Pratt).Walter and Sarah married on 30/nov/1749 in Ross.
Someone contacted me on rootschat about another Walter Gundy who was living in Whitchurch in 1871 aged 40.Walter and Sarah Clayton had a son,Walter,b.1827 and I initially thought this might be him in 1871.I looked on ancestry and the Walter b.1831 was down as having parents Thomas Gundy and Ann Brown.Thomas and Ann married on 12/nov/1807 in Llanvihangel Ystern Llewern in Monmouthshire(close to Whitchurch)

Again many thanks.I'm now trying to find out parents of Walter Gundy and Sarah Pratt
kind regards ivorglyn

Hi Ivor,
thanks for your kind words, it was my pleasure. Sorry to be telling you that some of the Gundys were not the most law-abiding, altho of course these were difficult times and maybe they were just people on low or no incomes who were just trying to feed themselves as best they could, not unusual at all in those times including some of my own ancestors too. Those old newspapers can indeed be very interesting, altho sadly for us they often relate to unpleasant events.

Yes, clearly Walter was a very popular "traditional" name in the Gundy families.

Here's another story from the old newspapers which may be relevant to your lines;

"MONMOUTH.
Accidents.— Sunday last a poor woman named Elizabeth Gundy, residing at the Kymin, met with serious accident in consequence of her clothes taking fire, by which she was so dreadfully burnt, that little hopes are entertained of her recovery. On the same day, a child named Thomas Gould, residing with his parents at Doward, was burnt in a most shocking manner by his clothes taking fire. Death almost immediately terminated his sufferings, before medical assistance could be obtained."

17 February 1844 - Hereford Times - Hereford

Which matches this PR from this FoD site;

(I cannot find a Death/burial record for poor Thomas on FreeBMD or this FoD site.)

-------------

I've searched the FMP and FamilySearch sites for more Marriage Records for Walter Gundy & Sarah Pratt 30/nov/1749 in Ross, hoping they might include fathers' names, but sadly I cannot find any more records.
I have found this Marriage Record from the ever-helpful and highly-recommended FamilySearch site, it's the earliest Herefordshire record I've found for a Walter Gundy and isn't included within this FoD site's PRs. FamilySearch also has these related baptisms.

Name Walter Gundy
Spouse's Name Mary Marsh
Event Date 04 Jun 1686
Event Place Ross, Hereford, England

Name Mary Gundy
Gender Female
Christening Date 31 Jan 1686
Christening Place ROSS, HEREFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
Father's Name Walter Gundy
Mother's Name Mary

Name John Gundy
Gender Male
Christening Date 1688
Christening Place ROSS, HEREFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
Father's Name Walter Gundy
Mother's Name Mary

Hoping this helps. As with my earlier post, I recommend using FamilySearch to find all records for "GUNDY" in "Ross Herefordshire" between say "1600-1750" etc, to get a good idea of the various GUNDY families in Ross in that era, and so to get clues as to who fits where, hopefully including the Walter who married Sarah Pratt. It might also be wise to repeat this search in neighbouring "Gloucestershire" and then "Monmouthshire".
Once you have names of a couple, probably the quickest way to find their children is using this site's Advanced Search, which yields many groups such as these, for example;

Surname, Child Forenames, Fathers & Mothers Forenames, Parish Chapel

1671 GUNDY John, Walter & Sybell, Ross on Wye
1674 GUNDY Elizabeth, Walter & Sybell,Ross on Wye
1679 GUNDY Tobyas, Walter & Sybell, Ross on Wye
1682 GUNDY Stephen, Walter & Sybell, Ross on Wye

1704 GUNDY Walter, Walter & Esther, Ross on Wye
1706 GUNDY William, Walter & Esther, Ross on Wye

etc etc
