Newport Market and Newport (General)
I know this isn't in the FoD area, but I can't seem to find the answer to this seemingly simple question.
Where is Newport Market ? (as appears on the BMD index as Newport M)
Is it Newport, part of Newport, or somewhere completely different ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Newport ( provisions) Market circa 1855 is in the centre of "modern" Newport i.e. on the riverside, including the area of Pill. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_Market

Newport historically was "St Woolas" centred on Stow hill.

In registration terms when I see Newport M or Newport Market I think of the areas in Newport around the river and Pill, when I see Newport I think of the larger Newport "area", and when I see St Woolas i think of Stow Hill area to the east of the centre.

Newport Market and Newport
I used to go to Newport market regularly with my gran!!! It was a huge indoor, warehouse type of building with two floors.
We used to eat their speciality of peas and faggots! (those were the days!)

Thank you all very much.
I thought it had to be something like that, but wast sure.

I second the opinion about the faggots and peas at Newport market

Don,t forget the cattle market which was bounded by Commercial Road, Lower Dock Street
and Ruperra Street.
I used to to to the provision market, bounded by High Street,Dock Street,Skinner Street
and Market Street, with my gran, from Woolaston Station on the 6.20? market train on
Saturdays. Taking baskets of eggs, dressed poultry and in season fruit and veg, coming
home laden with sausages from Baldwins pork butchers. I can,t remember too much about
the early days with gran ,pre 1949. I used to go down with a vanload on Friday and
Saturday until about 1967, when the older regular customers were dying out and peoples
tastes were changing, making it not viable.

Where have you seen Newport Market? I've only come across across that in some transcriptions on Ancestry, but when I check the images, all the ones I've come across actually say Newport M. Given the inaccuracies that occur in these transcriptions (such as registration districts listed as being in the wrong county, eg Newport Glamorganshire or even Radnorshire ) I have always assumed that Newport Market is a mistake written by someone who didn't know better.
There are three Newport registration districts as far as I'm aware:
Newport M is Newport in Monmouthshire
Newport S is Newport in Shropshire
Newport Pagnell is in Buckinghamshire
and I've always assumed the M was to distinguish it from the other two.
Of course I could be quite wrong!

Newport Market and Newport M
The Register Office in Newport used to be sited off the High Street entrance to Newport market certainly up until the early 1970s. As far as I can remember, you entered via a door on the left and went upstairs to the actual office.
It was subsequently moved to 'Gold Tops' next to St Mark's Church near the Civic Centre, and quite recently to the Old Mansion House Stow Park Circle Newport.
Hope that helps.
