Richard SHOTT - 1650s 1st son born Westbury on Severn (General)
Hi
I am new to researching around the area of Forest Dean as I was previously tracing my Shott ancestors in London. I found the apprentice record (1716) of my 6 x Grandfather William Shott to John Shott (master) London, father Richard Shott, Pendock, Worcester, yeoman. To cut a long story short, I found out that John Shott (master) was William's Uncle, John's father was a Richard Shott and mother Alice. John Shott was born in Colwall, Herefordshire 1660 but was in Berrow Worcester by 1674.
Richard Shott my 7th Great Grandfather was John's older brother and he was born to Richard and Alice Shott 1654 Westbury on Severn. I found twin sisters also born in Colwall - in fact twins are in nearly every generation!
I have searched your great site but can not find any Richard Shott born between 1600 and 1635 around the Forest of Dean or any marriage between Richard Shott and Alice, can not see any early Shott marriages. There are families in the 1600s Westbury on Severn specifically headed by a Thomas Shott, I found a will for Thomas Shott in Westbury, Mariner but I think it was in Latin!
My direct ancestors moved to London but left Uncles and Aunts behind in Worcestershire but 2 twin brothers moved to Aston Ingham, Richard Shott and Thomas Shott in the 1770s.
What I really would like to do is trace Richard Shott and Alice to see if they were related to the Shotts of Westbury and where they married. Is there any where else I can try. The only Richard Shott I can find in Gloucester is on the IGI site and it is a Richard Shott from Barnwood 1616.
Any help/thoughts greatly appreciated
Debbie

Thanks, Very interesting website, worth a good look.
With regards to the marriage of Richard and Alice Rogers 1646 I did look at that and on the scan it doesn't mention any details of whether they were of the parish or widowed.
I can not find any children to a marriage of Richard and Alice before 1654, Westbury anywhere in country.
My other avenue of thought is that John Shott son of Richard and Alice, was successful in London belonging to the Barber and Surgeon Guild and left a will when he died in 1741 - the will was written in 1739 when he was 79. There is a few references to kinsman and cousins although they are more likely to be nephews, nieces or 2nd cousins at his age. None of the family were mention in Worcester of the Forest of Dean area - my 6 x great grandfather William Shott was mentioned although called a cousin. A kinsman called Edward Shott was mentioned living in Uxbridge but I can not find any trace. Thought that might help me work out where Richard Shott originated from.
I have tried tracing some of the names mentioned in the will but are not having much luck - but I will have another go. John mention a cousin called Katherine Bryan of uxbridge and it may be a totally coincidental but there is a marriage to a Owen Bryan in London mid 1680s to a Martha Shott and John had an older sister called Martha.
Does anyone know where the early wills of the Forest of Dean are or any in the Gloucestershire area, may try and find whether they mention a son called Richard Shott in them.
Kind Regards
Debs
