A picture appears in the Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucester Graphic on the 16 June 1917 and written below it is the following

Inspector APPERLEY

Of Cheltenham Post Office, who retired on Saturday, June 11th under the age limit after 34 years' Post Office service, twelve of which hass been spent in Cheltenham.

An official farewell was given him in the postmen's room. Mr Freeling, Postmaster presiding

Inspector APPERLEY has spent a varied career, working in a Dean Forest coal mine for six years as a boy, afterwards joining the Army, serving in India, Cyprus and Egypt, where he saw active service.
