hello - I live in a farmhouse which was once known as Macklins Farm in Herefordshire. My understanding is that it was called Macklins Farm because the macklin family lived here. It is now called The Macklin. Does this help? Can you help me - I am researching the history of the house.

On the 1881 census for Mansell Lacy
Most cottages aren't named - (no-one named MACKLIN)
There is a William TRIGG age 39 who is the Post Constable with his family, born Glos. Drybrook - so the cottages after this should be 'MACKLINs'

thank you! I have some of this information but not all. Trying to trace the history of a house is not easy when properties are not named on certain documents i.e. census. It leaves one with the question - are all not named
or was the house in question not named!
I seek a connection between this 16th C farmhouse called Macklins Farm and a Macklin family member. All help gratefully received!

The house ins't named before the 1891 census - neither are there any MACKLIN families listed in the census returns.
Herefordshire Records office may hold documents. There website has a guide on House History Research.

I was in Hereford Records office 2 days ago looking at documents relating to my search. I found a reference in Littleburys Gazetter of Herefordshire 1867 to Thomas Williams of Macklins and in Cassey Directory 1858 Lloyd Williams of Maclands. This farmer was mentioned in Lascelles 1851 directory but house was not named.
I have not finished my search in the records office but at this moment can get no further back than this.

Perhaps these general Herefordshire FH sites may be of some help in your search (apologies if you already have tried them).
The Herefordshire Surnames site does have contact details for a Macklin searcher, it may be outofdate but well worth a try ?. (I stumbled across this site a few years back and it has helped me a lot).

Re House names in general in past Census' etc, I don't think it at all unusual that houses did not have names or numbers particularly in the less-heavily populated rural areas & villages, everyone knew each other by name including the postman of course, and a house would often stay in the same family for generations. I suppose those who were "in business" including Farms would be more likely to have names as the C19th progressed but not necessarily smaller houses.

hello - I have been researching and have discovered our house was named Macklins Farm in 1710 when a weaver John Macklin and his wife Anne moved to Mansel Lacy from Bishopstone. He was the son of John Macklin (s) yeoman farmer of Knap Farm, Bridge Sollars. The last Macklin to live in the house was Ester Edith Macklin who left in 1820 possibly to enter a workhouse.
