Report from the (Cardiff) "Evening Express" of 17th September 1892, Pink Edition.
"Shocking Fatality in Dean Forest.
James Jones, 62 years of age, labourer, of Bill-Hill, Lydbrook, was instantaneously killed whilst at work at the Lydbrook Deep Level Colliery, West Dean. Deceased and other men were taking down an overhead wood bridge, which had been used for carrying coals on to the Severn and Wye and Severn Bridge Railway. He had just sawn through, close to the ground, one of the 8inch baulks which supported the bridge, the timber being about 15ft in length, when it fell upon him, smashing his head to pieces."

This was also reported that same Saturday by the Gloster Citizen as can be found via the British Newspaper Archive site which clarifies the address as Bell Hill.
Altho' there are rather a lot of us Jones' in Lydbrook, I think this is our man from this site's PRs;

I cannot find an obvious Baptism for him abt 1830 in this site's PRs.

It states one of the three witnesses was "William Jones, Carpenter, Lydbrook". a relative I wonder ??
And the jury concludes: " deceased by his negligence largely contributed to his own death".

Thanks S, very interesting indeed, thanks muchly for untangling that one.
I see James died just a few weeks after his wife of almost 30 years.
No wonder his mind wasn't fully on his work, or just maybe things turned out precisely as he may have been hoping ?....
