Lloyd George 1909 Land Survey Ruspidge properties (General)
Land & property owned by John Dorrington 1827-1911 a miner
We had a look at the land survey as you suggested and its
detail is fascinating.
We found five properties in Ruspidge East Dean owned
by John Dorrington which together were valued at £340 which
accounts for most of the £442 he left in his will.
One of the
properties 38 Ruspidge Road was occupied by Barter & Son who turned out to be a
green grocer and fish dealer.
On the basis of this John would have been worth at to-days
prices about £809,000 if one adds in an average price for the
fifth property.
One wonders how in such a poor area he had managed
to amass so large a portfolio on a miner's pay.
Seriously, it would be interesting to know
how he did it at a time when most ordinary people did not own
even one property, let alone five.
Any ideas please?
Interesting too that John Dorrington appears to have made his mark rather than sign documents so how and where he became the owner of five properties is a mystery!
