Charles Williams of Llandogo (General)
by KathrynBarnard , Monday, July 01, 2013, 12:34 (4158 days ago)
I wonder if somebody could help me please. I am trying to find my great great great grandfather and mother Charles Williams b: 1786 and Elizabeth Williams b: 1787, I'm not sure if they were born in Llandogo or Trelleck. Charles was a Master Mariner and the owner of the Trow 'Joseph'. They had 6 children, one being my great great grandmother Elizabeth Williams b: 1818 in Llandogo. Elizabeth had an illegitimate child called Emma b: 1845, according to the Census's she was born in Cardiff, but I have checked with Glamorgan Archives and they cannot find a birth for that date or around it. The next Census she appears on is back in Monmouth as a Servant in 1861. In 1871 she is living with her mother at Pilstone Farm, Llandogo. In 1872 she marries my great grandfather William Rosser, who is also illegitimate, his mother being Elizabeth Rosser b: 1821 in Clytha. She marries John Madley, not William's father, in Llandogo in 1849. William becomes a sailor on the "Hannah Louisa" in 1869. In 1881 Emma and William are found staying in the Ship Inn, Llandogo, with their 5 boys, one being my grandfather Charles Richard Rosser b: 1877. Can anybody shed any light on these people please.
Thanking you.
Kathryn Barnard.

Charles & Elizabeth Williams of Llandogo b1780s

Hi Kathryn, welcome to the forum !
First, please edit your post as it's not a good idea to include your full email address, unfortunately this may attract unwanted spam emails etc. See
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=9711
If other posters wish to contact you off the forum they can send you secure emails by clicking your "envelope" icon. At the least swop the @ for "at" or similar, I'm told this fools the automated systems that sweep the net for email addresses but I must say I'm not convinced this still works ?
Moving on, have you searched this site's Parish Record database for Charles & ELizabeth, I'm afraid I'm not sure from your post whether your given "b" dates are derived from the later Censuses(you don't mention them), or are they from PRs you've already found ?. This database does include Llandogo PRs, but not Trellech.
I have searched this forum for prior posts but cannot find any that are obviously related, although hopefully I'm wrong (again) in this respect and they are here....
From this site's LLandogo PRs there are several Williams, unsurprisingly, including the following which I suspect you've seen. However if I were able to search Trellech PRs I suspect they'd also include these fairly common names, so not sure how conclusive this is ??

However note there are other Elizabeths baptised at Llandogo within a few years of your suspected date, so ?. The Llandogo PRs don't include any likely Marriage between them.
Please confirm if these PRs are what you've already found, thanks.

I can only search Censuses using the LDS site which gives individuals not households. Is this your Charles do you know, this one is born 1786/7 ?

As expected the excellent Genuki site yields some interesting background and history for the very old Parishes of Trellech and nearby Llandogo which I knew very little about until today, thanks for helping enlighten me Kathryn.

There is on Rootsweb Monmouth - an old entry - Tues 2 November 2004 - re: ELLAWAY - this is just a section....
' James ELLAWAY, master mariner of Brockweir, had a share in the 51 ton schooner, 'Castle' on 26 April 1846. The other share holder was trow owner, Charles WILLIAMS, of Llandogo. J ELLAWAY sold his share to C WILLIAMS on 11 September 1846'
