Alicia Hunmande (General)

by francesmillard @, Monday, August 05, 2013, 13:01 (4123 days ago)

15 May 1720 Alicia Hunmande married Jonathan Hare in Gloucester Cathderal. Could this be Alicia (Alice) Hunman de somewhere? (Her residence is listed as de Eaden but I cannot find Eaden). I have found their children but not their forebears. Could anyone be married in the Cathedral? Any help with Hares or Hunman(de)s greatly appreciated.

I wonder if the record is CHURCHAM but transcribed as "de eaden" because that is the way the handwriting looks - "ch" read as "d" or "de"

I have found their children but not their forebears. Could anyone be married in the Cathedral?

I suspect that you would have needed " an introduction" to marry in St Peters unless it was your parish church i.e. the Precincts.

Any help with Hares or Hunman(de)s greatly appreciated.

Looking at Gloucestershire Marriage Index CD pre 1800 - there are only two male HARE marriages listed

James HARE of Hardwick, married Hannah HALE at Fretherne - 12 June 1724 (where Jonathan HARE is from)
Thomas HARE married Martha WOOD at Slimbridge - 20 August 1764

Can't see any female HARE marriages or
the surname/variants HUNMANDE

I just wonder if it maybe Alice HANMAN, common name in that area. Family Search has two Alice HANMANs, one baptised 14/2/1703 in Elmore (very close to Hardwicke) father John. And another baptised 10/3/1699 in Minsterworth (very close but across the river)(there was a ferry)parents Thomas & Elizabeth. Churcham close to Minsterworth too. You could follow those two up.

Well, it looks as though Hanman is a real possibility. And possibly Churcham is de Eaden (the children were baptised in Churcham).

But I am not sure how to chase this further - I cannot find Alice's or Jonathan's baptism - or even burials. If they were married in St. Peter's 'by invitation' could they be buried there?. They were presumably born c 1700 at the latest, more likely 1690ish. This makes Henry Hanman and Anna Ball the only likely candidates for Alice's parents.

The Hares seem to have large gaps...

If you check the Gloucestershire Records Office - Will base - there are loads of HANMAN/HANDMAN - from Elsmore and other places etc around that time - this should help give some indication where they were all living - can see family names i.e. Anselm HANMAN 1691 Elmore

You are getting into "misty" times with the records/registers, one to consider

Thanks, slowhands - it seems likely that Thomas and Elizabeth were the parents of my Alice and a brother or sister. If they were in Over in 1700 and then in Churcham in 1705, reading de Eade as Churcham for the marriage of Jonathan and Alice in 1720 becomes even more plausible.

"de eadem"

by grahamdavison @, Tuesday, August 06, 2013, 12:37 (4122 days ago) @ francesmillard

The term de eadem occurs regularly in the parish registers it means "of the same" and usually indicates that the bride is of the same parish as the groom.

yes, of course, de eadem becomes de eaden in the transcription. Thank you!
