William DAVIS 1778 - 1858

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Monday, March 03, 2014, 14:24 (3913 days ago) @ davointassie

Hi Dave,
purely on the info in this thread (I don't have full census acess etc) I presume William & Elizabeth married sometime between 1810 (earliest based on Eliza's birthdate) and 1822(birth of first child), and in the Newent area if this is Elizabeth's home. I think our William was in Taynton parish (includes Glasshouse) in 1841 Census but am NOT certain, I don't have full census access and it's a common name. Am I correct, please ?.

Anyhow, using the excellent "advanced search" to search this site's Marriage Records more specifically gives this Marriage which seems the best fit by far to me;

Record_ID 32438

Further evidence to back this up (or not!) might be obtained if the witnesses can be researched and perhaps placed in William & Elizabeth's lives.

Linton is less than 5 miles from Newent and just nearer to Glasshouse Hill;
http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/nearby?CCC=HEF,GRIDREF=SO660250,DISTANCE=5,PN=Linton
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/Linton/Gaz1868.html

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/index.php/forest-of-dean-parish-map

Given the lack of family witnesses, plus marrying at a chapel just across the county border, does this suggest they were marrying in secret ??.

Then again, I see this Baptism which fits Elizabeth nicely, thankfully Frowen is a far less common name:

Record_ID: 237369
Entry_Number:
Year: 1797
Month: Aug
Day: 27
Parents_Surname: FROWEN
Child_Forenames: Elizabeth
Fathers_Forenames: James
Mothers_Forenames: Elizabeth
Mothers_Surname:

Occupation:
Officiating_Minister:
Event: Baptism
Memoranda:

So it seems her home parish was Linton rather than Newent. Would I be correct in thinking you thought Newent as this was given by the later Census' ?. This makes sense, as Newent is the main Glostershire town in the area so appropriate for Census purposes.

How does this seem to you ?.

William DAVIS 1778 - 1858, GLASSHOUSE Hill, Common

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Thursday, March 13, 2014, 15:02 (3903 days ago) @ davointassie

Hi Davo,
searching tinternet gave this site which may help you, I think your "Common" refers to the "Green" mentioned in the site ?.
http://common-land.com/lands/show/newent%20and%20taynton

Clicking the "Green" heading gives precise location and a modern map. If you zoom into the map it labels Glasshouse Hill slightly to the west, between Bearfoot Wood and Castle Hill Wood. I suggest you compare this map to the period Ordnance Survey maps www.old-maps.co.uk, search using postcode GL17 ONN as there are other similar names around the UK.

Sadly this area isn't yet covered online by the British History series of books, and my copy of the first book is currently 120 miles away, sorry.
This site has a few photos of the general area which may be of interest.

UPDATE: Ooops, knew I should have searched the forum first, or better still read this whole thread, must be all this sunshine !. I see Slowhands has already discussed the area in his earlier post last year.
