William SAYSUM of Lydney, a Hero this week 115 years ago. (General)

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Friday, December 06, 2013, 03:46 (4000 days ago)

My thanks and best wishes go out to any descendants of brave William Saysum; it's good to read such a heartwarming story amongst the usual sad ones within the old newspapers. It would be nice if the silver watch is still in the family, but even if not I think William's brave & selfless act is even more important than the recognition he most surely deserved.

From the Cardiff Times of 3rd December 1898, almost exactly 115 years ago...

"DEAN FOREST.
A PLUCKY TINPLATER.— On Wednesday at Lydney Police Station William Saysum, tin-plate worker, of Lydney, was. at the hands of Superintendent Ford, the recipient of a silver albert chain and pendant, presented by the superintendent, sergeants, and constables of the Foresrt Division in recognition of the bravery which Saysum displayed m going to the rescue of P.C. Hazell, of Lydney, who was being stoned by three young men on the night of the 2nd of October whilst in the execution of his duty. The prisoners were found guilty at the Gloucester Quarter Sessions, and sentenced to terms of four and six months' imprisonment."

I think this is the same William born abt 1867, parents George & Mary, as per this prior thread.
