Aristarchus Barrar (General)

by Peter Preece @, Friday, January 10, 2014, 14:46 (3964 days ago)

In my family tree I have Aristarchus Barrar born 1755 marrying Frances Digget (Digges?) in 1781 at Monmouth. I am unable to trace them after this date-1781.
Can anyone help.
Thanks.

As well as on LDS as you know, the Marriage is in this site's PRs;

Hopefuly this is of some help ?

I've found little else on other sites, except to confirm the BARRAR name seems prevalent within FreeBMD's entries for Herefordshire (Kington & Leominster) in the earlier 1800s, unlike Digges/Digget or, oddly, BarrEr.
May well be worth contacting this forum/website ?
http://www.herefordshirefhs.org.uk/forum

Browsing FreeBMD & LDS I also see a few Irish Barrars, also in Warwickshire as well as the Marches; this plus it's relative rarity all leads me to wonder if maybe it's a traveller/gipsy (canals?) surname ??

Also from FoD PRs, not sure if related, this is the ONLY other Barrar in the PRs(no BARRERS at all);

Record_ID: 98446

Also in FoD PRs are a few BORRERs, in Hope Mansell so Herefordshire side of Forest (altho FreeBMD suggests this is very much a Sussex name), and a BAROR in Bream 1774.

Many thanks to MPG, Jefff and the Selbyfamily for your replies which have proved very helpful. Aristarchus Barrar was the son of Artimona Merrick who married John Barrar at Hereford Cathedral in 1737. Artimona was the sister of Aristarchus and Artemidorus and others. Her parents were Walter Merrick and Mary Pye who married in 1704 at King's Stanley, Glos. Mary Pye came from Newland, FOD. The Merrick family is well documented from 1580 onwards and in the last two centuries a number of family trees have been made.
Many thanks,

In my last post I mentioned Walter Merrick marrying Mary Pye in 1704 at King's Stanley, Glos. In the latest batch of Marriage Allegations I find that Record No 28916 is for Walter and Mary. I know that Walter Merrick's parents and grand-parents were founding members of the Friends Meeting House in Ross in the mid-1600s. It is thought that Walter was a Quaker but that Mary was not. Does the Memoranda: " The consent of friends" refer to Quakers? None of Walter and Mary's seven childre were in the Quaker movement. Any comments welcome.
PS This site gets better and better by the day.

My understanding is that the bridegroom made the allegation but that two friends could do it on his behalf. Perhaps this might be the case here. Someone correct me if this is wrong!

Hi,
this subject is totally new to me so cannot speak with any authority. I have found this RootsChat thread on Marriage Allegations which I've found very informative in general, altho sadly the specific question wrt defining "consent of friends" is yet to be unanswered....
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=19288.0

My viewpoint albeit based on very limited experience and searching tinternet is the phrase is a fairly common one and relates to friends in the usual sense, not Friends as in Quakers & Meeting House(as much as I do want to believe that idea!).

This different RootsChat thread appears to confirm this
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=251942.0

Also http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-54913.html

Yertiz(?).. Again and as before I cannot vouch for the expertise of the posters, but this thread confidently affirms such "friends" are not Quakers.
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php/67515-one-more-stupid-question!

Hope this helps, thanks for the interesting query.

If you look at the other Marriage Allegations residence Newland 1704

i.e.

John YOUNG/Mary COOKE - 23 February 1704
John HILO/Anne LOCKER - 28 February 1704
etc

- there are also notes: The consent of friends.
