William Cooke 1660 - 1713 (General)
by tonyjenkins , Friday, January 24, 2014, 15:04 (3951 days ago)
My 8x Great Grandfather is William Cooke born 1660 died Bream 1713. I believe his will is listed on the National archive site, as proved by the bishop of Gloucester in 1714.
The daughter of William Cooke, Ann married my 7x Great Grandfather Evan Jenkins at Newland in 1701.
Can anyone advise on how to get a copy of the above will?
Could this the same William Cooke who was member of parliament for West Dean in 1679? (aged 19)and granted a Knight of the Royal oak in 1681?
Many thanks in anticipation of your help.
Tony Jenkins.

Hi Tony,
my VERY quick search of the NA site didn't find the Will, but there are a lot of Wm Cookes to search thro and too litle time here, sorry. However, on the expectation that such a Will would probably be held by Gloucester Archives, I've now searched their site. If you've not tried it before I recommend you browsing their Genealogical database as link below.
This shows a few hits for William Cooke of Bream abt 1713 including a Will. You can order copies from Gloster Archives via that site.

(Click the relevant bold surname to reveal more detail)
Alternatively I guess you can view the actual Will if you visit in person. I've never been to the Archives, but many other forum-users have and will hopefully advise. I'm thinking Gloster Archives here, but I think the same also applies to the National Archives at London.

Re being an MP for West Dean.
Was there a "government" area/district here called "West Dean" in the 1600s ? If so would it be sufficiently populated to have an MP ?
Are you sure you're not thinking of the other West Dean in Sussex, or even Wiltshire ?.
Hoping I'm wrong (likely!) but just a thought ??
This website may help clarify, there was a Wm Cooke at Highnam nr Gloster, and yes he was involved with the Forest etc too. Don't think it's "your" William tho.

William Cooke 1660 - 1713 or 1714

?
Is Ann the child of William and Welthian COOKE?
As Welthian COOK is buried at Newland - 3 August 1701 - wife of William
and
a William COOK - residence Breem - is buried at Newland - 21 February 1714
and Evan JENKINS married Ann COOK at Newland, 4 June 1701 (previous thread on this couple)
---
One would assume William would be buried with his wife.
------
The William COOK buried 19 October 1713 is at Newent - although UK Extracted Probate Records - say this William was from Bream.
There are many William COOK's in Gloucestershire around that time on Ancestry records.
---
Number of Trees on Ancestry
William (Guil) COOK 1660 - 1748 married Welthian TERRET 1650-1701
children: Joyce 1667, Elizabeth 1678, Johes 1682, Ann 1687-1758
?
Says William went on to marry Elnor POVEL - 25 Sept 1709 at Whitchurch, Shropshire and died 31 July 1729 at Wrockwardeine, Shropshire.
Another tree, says William COOK died in 1748 age 88 Newland
So, take your pick

The MP (one of two) for Gloucester in 1679 was William Cooke (1620-1703)of Highnam Court. There were others of the same name and place, both before and after him, who occupied the same position. Something of a family business it appears. I guess at least part of the Forest was included in his territory.

Have ordered a copy of the will and inventory from Glos. Arch. The order list indicates he was a collier.
