On Rootsweb, Gloucester - 22 November 2001 - this is an old message from Ken & Connie Nicholl in Ontario -

'Is there anyone out there who is connected to my GGGrandmother, Mary APPERLEY, baptised March 1797 at NEWENT. The IGI gives her father as Peter Apperley; her mother's name does not appear. Other info gives a Mary, born to a Mary APLEY, same date, same place, and the death certificate I have is correct as to the age of this Mary (junior).

Mary b 1797, married a William MANN in 1828. Eldest daughter EMILY married an Edwin WOOD. Children were, Phoebe Ellen, Emily Ann, Kate, Elizabeth, Esther, Harriett, Mary Ann and Charles. I have given all these names because sometimes certain names are repeated throughout the generations and can be used as clues.

The name PETER appears only seldom on the IGI; there was a PETER born to George & Hannah APPERLEY 30 October 1854 at NEWENT. I would like to be able to link him to the Peter who fathered my Mary in 1797.

Also, APPERLEY and SIR EDWARD ELGAR; My siblings and I grew up in the belief that we were related to the Sir Edward through the Apperley or Mann branch. There is a verified relationship established through the marriage of Hester APPERLEY, daughter of William, who married Joseph GREENING in 1806. Their daughter Ann married William ELGAR who became the father of Edward.

I've never been able to establish any connection on my side; (never asked questions while my parents were still alive), but in my mother's postcard album there is a sepia photo p.c. of Sir Edward, and on the back my mother has written, "Dear Mother, I hope you like this picture of your Uncle." No date or address, but it would be c1900-1910…. etc etc"…
