The distance is 2 miles max. from Broadwell but not in the same direction as Coleford which is about 1 mile from Broadwell.

You may find the Parish Map on this site helpful. Here is the link:

Hi,
please don't forget you can search this hugely informative website from the box at top righthand of the main homepage.http://www.forest-of-dean.net/
Alternatively you can visit the individual sections, eg the Photo Gallery.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/christchurch/
And in the first page of the Churches section you'll see a couple of old views of Christchurch, one is from 2002 which I guess is the one you've found. I don't know the Church firsthand but I presume the Graves are behind it, this photo being taken from the main road.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/churches/index.html
Searching the net gave this site which has a satellite photo of the Church, if you zoom into the photo it shows a large graveyard behind the Church.
http://www.christchurchfod.org.uk/?page_id=59

Furthermore the Resources section carries a huge amount of material that may help you, the Documents section carries a huge amount of old articles, newspaper cuttings etc and makes great browsing which can often give unexpected results relevant to your researches.
Also in the Resources Section you'll find several Memorial Inscriptions taken from Christchurch Graveyard, including over thirty Powells. In these sections the blue headings are usually hyperlinks, click your pointer on them to enter that sub-section.

It's always worth searching this forum thoroughly before posting as very often enquiries such as yours will have been made in earlier years. You may also find other users enquiring about your family, possibly even distant/new relatives. Use the Forum's own searchbox at topright, as I have just done to find these old threads which should help you.

The first of these contains links to sites containing more detail about Christchurch and it's location, including contact details to ask the Church direct.
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=38105
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=8401

Perhaps Chris Powell c2009 is one of your relatives ?, see
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=18039

Hope this helps, Jeff

PS SORRY !
I've just realised some of the links contained within the above old posts will not work (if they are directed to other forum posts) they'll just return you to the "new" home page. This is a result of last year's forum update. Usually if I find one of my old posts has these dead links I'll edit the post accordingly, but in this instance I cannot as the threads are locked, sorry.
Here is the direct link for one of the Christchurch graves threads which I referred to within one of the old threads.

I'm sorry you're having such problems logging in, as per my post re passwords yesterday I cannot understand this as have never experienced it. Hopefully one of this site's Administrators can help you, I'm afraid I cannot, like you I'm at the mercy of this noowfangled electrickery ;-)

For the time being hopefully you can follow my links and find what you need, in short yes theres a Graveyard at Christchurch and it seems easily accessible, unlike some graveyards that have been sadly neglected over the years.

Good luck, Jeff

Reading those old threads reminds me that I'm sure I saw recent photos of individual graves on this website, as I've mentioned in the posts, but now I cannot find them, are they still here I wonder ?.

Re Caroline d1914, sadly I'm unable to find her Monument Inscription on this site among the many Powells ?.

Finally, for old photos this is a good site, none of the Church itself but there are a few young Powells named on the old Christchurch school photos.

You could try researching the names to see if they seem part of your tree.
eg the 1935 picture has a Graham Powell aged maybe 5 or so?, and behind him a Pat Powell who looks like an older sister.
Searching this site's PRs, plus GlosBMD and FreeBMD shows these are not common names, particularly Graham. Pat is probably Patricia altho could be Patience ?

FreeBMD has the following birth which seems most likely to be the lad in the photo, Monmouth being the correct District for registering Coleford/Christchurch births;

Surname Given Name Mother District Volume Page Transcriber
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1930
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Powell Graham Morgan Monmouth 11a 34 coralieM

Could this be P be for Pat ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1929
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Powell Margaret P. Morgan Monmouth 11a 39 jakems

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

By no means certain but amongst the various Powell/Morgan marriages on GlosBMD this one stands out to me as most likely

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
-----------------------------------------------------------------
POWELL Frank MORGAN Dorothy Elizabeth Forest of Dean Monmouth Register Office 1929 30 109

http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/MarriageSearch.aspx

Similarly searching local Powell/Morgan marriages on FreeBMD shows the above Marriage tookplace in the Jan/Feb/MARch quarter of 1929.

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Mar 1929 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morgan Dorothy E Powell Monmouth 11a 56
Powell Frank Morgan Monmouth 11a 56

Again from GlosBMD, this seems the best fit for Frank's birth, altho not a rare name at all of course.

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
POWELL Frank POWELL POWELL WATKINS 1904 Forest of Dean Monmouth, Coleford 61 259

And so on. These can also be searched out in the 1911 Census to help build the tree, and see if it's possibly part of yours.
Also these older events come into the coverage of this website's PRs, this looks like Frank;

Record_ID: 371610
Entry_Number: 215
Year: 1904
Month: Nov
Day: 9
Parents_Surname: POWELL
Child_Forenames: Frank
Fathers_Forenames: Tom
Mothers_Forenames: Lucy
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Crossways
Occupation: Collier
Officiating_Minister: E.H. Brice
Event: Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P93 IN 1/8
Page_Number: 27
Parish_Chapel: Coleford
Soundex: P400

I cannot find a Marriage on this site, but back to the ever-useful GlosBMD gives this Marriage which proves that Lucy was indeed a Watkins as per Frank's birth registration.

Criteria entered: Groom Surname: powell, Groom Forename: tom, Bride Forename: lucy,

Number of entries matching criteria entered: 1

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
POWELL Tom WATKINS Lucy Forest of Dean Monmouth Register Office 1888 15 8

etc etc...

Do any of these names fit in your tree at all ?

Hoping this helps, happy hunting, Jeff

I have been away from the computer since lunchtime otherwise I would have posted to this thread earlier.

Christchurch has a fairly large churchyard and is in fact in two parts. Burials still take place there and many of my family are there including my parents ashes. But that is a by the way. The most important thing to say here is that this site has many resources which from the questions that are being posted to this Forum I can only conclude many are not using because they rarely look beyond the parish registers. For instance there is a searchable database of the Memorial Inscriptions of Christchurch Churchyard which will tell you that sadly there is not a gravestone for Caroline.
