St John's Church, Cinderford (General)

by Dannemois @, Wednesday, June 04, 2014, 16:50 (3819 days ago)

Hello
I am researching Edward and Mary Bassett and both were buried in St John's Church burial ground (details below) and I wondered if someone could please check if there is a gravestone and possible take a photograph of the memorial if there is one.

Mary Jane Bassett, buried April 3, 1920, age 35 and Edward David Bassett, buried 19 Sept 1951, age 72. I would appreciate any help.

Regards, Roy

Hi Roy,
sadly altho I'm from Cinderford I live many miles away, or I'd gladly offer to help you. Hopefully someone more local will be able to help. Meanwhile I'll post the full Burial details as I think the Register notes may help locate the Graves.

I know St John's is not included within the GlosFHS Memorial Inscriptions cd, and despite reading occasional posts on this subject in the past I don't know if the cemetary has been surveyed yet ? I recommend contacting the Church direct, they may be able to help you ?.

This site carries the same contact details, the contact name may have changed but the address & number should be current, I see it's the St Stephen's Vicarage that I used to know & visit as a lad.

Good luck with your request.

I was over by St. John's churchyard about two weeks ago and noticed that the grass is so high it is just about possible to see the low headstones, and impossible to see kerbed graves.
I am no 'health and safety' freak but it would be dangerous to try to walk amongst the graves. It would be all too easy to trip over kerbs or step down a hole (there are plenty of them there).
I will keep an eye on it to see if the grass gets cut, or try posting a reminder in the late autumn/winter.

There is a register of graves for St Johns. I did have the name and address of the keeper, but that was years ago. Best to try and contact the vicar/rector now to find out who keeps the register now.

Dear Roy,

I'd be most interested to hear if you find a listing of graves for St John's Church Cinderford. I have several ancestors who were buried there and I'd be keen to find out if there are any headstones. Living in Kent and working full-time means that a visit is unlikely, at least for the foreseeable future.

Best wishes, Jane
