jenny savidge (Parish Records)

by huw100 @, Resolven, Neath, West Glamorgan, Saturday, June 28, 2014, 00:03 (3796 days ago)

I am looking for a Jenny Savidge who was looking for records of her great grandparents from Lydbrook in Gloucestershire, I think that her grandfather John Simmonds may be my grandmother's (annie simmonds) brother. Can anyone help me trace this lady?

Hi Huw, welcome to the forum.
Am I right in understanding you're looking for a living Jenny who's been using this forum ?. Sorry if sounds a daft question, but I first thought you were searching for a Jenny Savidge from the past within the old parish records etc, that's the usual type of query we see here.

Was this abt 3 years ago ?.
If you click on "users" at topright by the search box, you can search all the users of the forum. There is a "jennysav" who I guess may be who you mean ?. If you click on her blue username, then click on the blue envelope icon, you can send an email direct to her computer inbox, assuming she hasn't changer her email address.
I hope this helps, good luck.

"jennysav" is not the lady being sought and Jenny Savidge is no longer registered on this Forum.

If you are talking about John SIMMONDS marrying Elizabeth WYDE (as mentioned by Jenny) - there are 4 Public Members Trees on Ancestry with this couple.

Can you see your Annie SIMMONDS in the previous thread? what date was she born - and whom did she marry??

Hi MP, thanks for your reply, yes I think that my grandmother Annie was possibly a sister to John Simmonds, Annie was born in 1892 in Lydbrook and I believe she may also have had a sister named Harriet. I know her parents names were William Simmonds and Mary Green. I don't see her name in a previous thread as you said, in fact I don't see a previous thread. Sorry but I am pretty much a novice when it comes to searches. What would you suggest is the best way forward for me to research my family tree/history if you don't mind me asking. I was going to do it the old fashioned way and take a trip to Lydbrook and leave a little note in the local post office or public house, in fact I HAVE been to Lydbrook to look around but didn't have the names of my ancestors with me so I just drove through and promised myself to return one day.
Thank you, Huw Davies

This is great thank you, I knew either Alfred or Annie had a brother called Evan (because I have a postcard to them from their brother Evan) but until now I didn't know who's brother he was.
And yes this is the correct family because I know for a fact that it was Alma street in Aberdare where they lived.
Thanks again for all your info, it is fantastic.

Henry DAVIES b abt 1853 Mathry, Pembrokeshire

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Sunday, June 29, 2014, 15:59 (3794 days ago) @ huw100

Thanks to MPG, "1891 Wales Census, 12 Alma Street Aberdare
Language Spoken: WELSH
DAVIES
Henry - 37 - Coal Miner, born Tremsarshog Pembrokeshire (as transcribed)
Sarah - 39 - born Llanthefirent Carmarthenshire"

Where & when were they born ?
I've tried to locate both these placenames in my atlas and also from the various placenames included within Pembrokeshire & Camarthenshire Districts off from the FreeBMD site, but no luck at all.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/pem.html
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/carmarthen.html

Searching the births on FreeBMD shows far too many Henry Davies births and marriages to Sarahs, even in "just" Camarthenshire for example, so what now ???

Huw, I don't know if you're aware but even non-subscribers like me can use the Ancestry site's search engine to access the 1881 Census. Similarly the LDS aka Family Search site (see my earlier post) can be used to access all the Census' altho the 1881 is usually the only one for which you can get complete households in one page. Hence I've searched for Henry and Sarah and in 1881 they were already living in Alma Street Aberdare, but at Number 19 #. I cannot give an easy listing off Ancestry but usefully it states

1881 Census 19 Alma St Aberdare

Henry (coal miner) was born abt 1854 "Mathry, Pembrokeshire, Wales"
Sarah was born abt 1852 "Llanddevsant, Carmarthenshire, Wales"
Their children are William Jas (James) born abt 1875
Henry Thos (Thomas) born Aberdare abt 1877
Mary Jane born Aberdare abt 1878
John Griffiths born Aberdare abt 1880

HOWEVER I still CANNOT find "Llanddevsant", or anything similar, clearly we need tonhope the couple were married by the 1871 Census and hope that's more forthcoming ??.
However I can find Mathry, hurrah!. Henry Davies was born in North West Pembrokeshire on the coast midway twixt St Davids and Fishguard.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathry
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Mathry/

The Genuki entry is quite helpfull if you wish to trace this back further.

The UKBMD site shows Mathry is in Haverfordwest District, ref http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/haverfordwest.html

So looking for Henry's birth record on FreeBMD in JUST this District and abt 1854 should be easier. However that site lists several Henry Davies' born abt that time & place; it rather looks like there are as many Henry Davies in Mathry as there were my William Jones in Lydbrook, not easy at all !. In this instance earlier Census records will hopefully be more helpfull and possibly include his parents/siblings ??

Sorry can't be more helpfull...

# thats IF the Ancestry transcription is correct, a curly 2 on the aforementioned 12 might easily look like a 19, etc. Ancestry often show some unlikely transcriptions, always best to read the actual Census form images yourself !

Cheers Mike !. Oddly enough my atlas(quite a good close-scale one), did have said place listed in the index but it was on Anglesey, so I discounted it. Rather frustrating now to see that your one IS also in my atlas, but they couldn't bother to list it in the same index. One of my pet-hates !!

So a beautifull place.

Alfred married Annie Simmonds on June 24th 1911, they were living at 19 Gloucester street, Aberdare at that time.
they had 5 children that I have known in my lifetime
Sarah May born 1913
Alfred John 1915
Violet May 1918
Albert Edwin 1919
Lewis Bernard 1927 18th May (my dad)

They also had
William Henry 1912 23rd of May Merthyr Tydfil district, entry 175, book 203
Gwilym Thomas 1923 22nd July entry 142, book 236

Alfred and Annie emigrated to Canada in 1929, where Annie died in October of that year due to eclampsia. Alfred returned to Wales with his 5 children in either 1930 or 1931. Alfred took residence in Abergarwed, Resolven, Neath, soon after and remained there till his death in the mid to late 1940's

"Alfred took residence in Abergarwed, Resolven, Neath, soon after and remained there till his death in the mid to late 1940's"

How sure are you of this date & place ?.
Did Alfred look "young" for his age, were their relatives around who knew his correct age, assuming they knew it accurately of course ?
Perhaps he had links with Coventry, war-work etc ?; could he possibly have died there and been returned home for Burial, the record would still say Coventry for example..

Searching FreeBMD, which offers good coverage for the FoD and South Wales areas, I cannot find a perfect fit Death Record; could he possibly have died in Coventry, say ?.

I also searched for "Davis" but with no more success.
(Unfortunately after 1911 only the initial of second etc names was recorded, not full names). Hopefully buying a full Death Certificate will confirm whether this is your Alfred.

he married Mary Ann (maiden or previous married name not known) but was possibly born October 10th 1883

I'm not sure whether Alfred may have died on the 25th April 1946 or possibly 13th May 1946.

Searching again for his Death Record I'm unable to find a clear definitive record on FreeBMD even when just seaarching mid 1946 !?

Thanks for mentioning his second marriage, that was much easier to find, again on FreeBMD;

Hi Huw,
to search for previous/prior threads(ie discussions) on this forum, just enter the word/words you want to search for in the "search" box at top right, click the adjacent arrows "button" and wait to see what comes up. Clicking on each thread found will open that whole thread. Unfortunately the word Simmonds could have had different spellings/mispellings over the years, so look out for similar-sounding variations too eg Symonds, Simmons, etc. From mpg's post, I've seached the forum for the more unusual name "Elizabeth Wyde" and found this thread which is clearly the right one. It was indeed started by Jenny Savidge, however in this case her username is coloured black, not blue, showing she's no longer active on the forum.
The thread can be found by clicking here => http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=19377

I hope you find what you're looking for; if not ask & we'll try to help you.

If you want to find individual records of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, click on the "Resources" heading at top left, then "Parish Records", and search from there.

I've searched the PRs for Annie born 1892 but no luck YET.
I've also tried the free sites GlosBMD & FreeBMD and have found her marriage;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
-----------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1911 (>99%)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Davies Alfred D Merthyr T. 11a 1409
Davies John Merthyr T. 11a 1409
Jones Sarah Merthyr T. 11a 1409
Simmonds Annie Merthyr T. 11a 1409

ie the above Marriages were Registered in the June quarter (April, May, or June) of 1911 in Merthyr Tydfil District. This includes Aberdare, see here http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/merthyr%20tydfil.html

These were found from this free website http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

PURELY a guess, but I wonder if the other Marriage was Alfred's relative/brother ??

Not certain yet as quite a common name in South Wales, as the FreeBMD results list will show you, but IF Alfred was definitely from Aberdare aka "Merthyr T" District, then this looks like possibly his Birth Registration, again from FreeBMD;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Can also see this Birth, could this be Alfred and Annie's, I wonder ???

BACK to Annie, searching GlosBMD gives her Birth record, shows mother as Green as you know;

This Birth was registered in the Oct/Nov/December Quarter according to FreeBMD
Births Dec 1892 (>99%)
----------------------------------------------------
Simmonds Annie Westbury, S. 6a 229

(NOTE !: FreeBMD shows there were a LOT of Annie Simmonds abt this time and area !!!)

However I'm still unable to find Annie's (or even Ann's etc) Baptism record in this sites PRs ?
Similarly I'm unable to find a Marriage twixt William Simmonds and Mary Green in the PRs, under any spelling. Similarly thusfar not in FreeBMD either, altho this site requires exact spelling matches and I havent tried all the varations, yet. I'm VERY happy to be proven wrong tho, can anyone help please ??
Just revisited the prior thread, dont think I can see these records there either, altho the Census records helpfully show William C Simmonds as born Lydbrook c1853 and Mary Green born Peterstow Herefds abt 1856.

FreeBMD shows that Peterstow came under "Ross District", which means our Mary should be one of these Births, but which ?;

Births Dec 1855 (>99%)
-------------------------------------------
Green Mary Ross 6a 367
Green Mary Ann Ross 6a 375

-------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1856 (>99%)
-------------------------------------------
Green Mary Hereford 6a 384

-------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1857 (>99%)
-------------------------------------------
Green Mary Ross 6a 417

Hopefully the 1911 Census will include both William and Mary, this Census will give their approximate Marriage year.

Searching GlosBMD site for ALL Simmonds/Green births gives the following including a John and a Harriet !. Matching the second post from the prior thread - 1891 Census;

Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
SIMMONDS John, SIMMONDS SIMMONDS GREEN 1881 Forest of Dean Monmouth, Coleford 39 230

Hi Jeff, Thank you very much for your superb post, I am in awe of your knowledge and your geneaology skills. In regard to your post, I have found a few items of interest (to me) here at home such as some birth certificates and a copy of Alfred and Annie's wedding certificate. I also have a copy of Annie,s death certificate, she died of eclampsia in Canada after they emigrated there in 1929.(Alfred returned to Wales with his five children soon after).
Alfred and Annie were wed on 24th June 1911, in the district of Merthyr Tydfil, page 69 entry no. 137
their place of residence at that time was 19 Gloucester street, Aberdare.
Alfred's Parents names were Henry and Sarah
Annie's parents names were William Edward Simmonds, and Mary (Green)
Alfred was born on the 27th March 1882 in the Merthyr Tydfil district, book of births no 109, entry no 194
Annie was born in 1892 in Lydbrook, and died 29th October 1929
Alfred and Annie had five children that I knew of (my dad being the youngest of those five) but I knew there were more siblings who either died at birth or at a very young age, and whilst looking through all my dad's old papers I have come across two birth certificates of older brothers of his who died at a young age.

Thank you for your help and information it is a lot to take in in one reading so I will pour over this many times I'm sure over the immediate future.

Thanks once again, Huw Davies

Good morning Huw,
I'm pleased you found our combined efforts helpfull, a big thanks to YOU for your kind words. From my viewpoint I don't have great knowledge particularly, I was just applying the basics using some free websites that I thought you could also find useful, altho my regular usage of them does help of course as they can be tricky to use at first. I've only been doing FH work for about five years now, and I'm so pleased to have found this great FoD site, easily one of the very best online resources in the UK, we're so lucky !
This prior thread may help you further wrt the various online FH resources that I've tried to introduce to you (sorry if I've overdone my explanations, but your post indicated you needed a little help in the right direction).
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=35197

To be honest it's the other forum members who have the real skills for digging out the hard-to-find things using lateral thinking; "out of the box" I think they call it these days in some parts, whereas I should probably be locked-away in one !

Another great free website that I use a lot is Genuki, great for getting a Victorian perspective of places and sometimes their inhabitants. I thought I knew the geography of our area fairly well, but so often I come across new places and I turn to Genuki. One of these was Hentland, Herefordshire, mentioned on one of MPG's Census returns above. I didn't recognise the name, but I now realise I've played cricket there in the past !. I think it's another rural village/hamlet that's almost disappeared off the modern maps as people's work habits and hence addresses have changed.

Sometimes the Genuki site will also include Census data, photos, maps etc, the site covers the whole UK, always worth a look in my opinion.

-------------

By coincidence here my father was born in Lydbrook, his father and forefathers were colliers there, although during the time of the 1861 Census they were living and working in Aberdare; small world eh !...
A real interest of mine is industrial history, I think I saw a mention of Lydbrook tinplaters in this thread, we've discussed that subject, both in Lydbrook and into Wales, plus of course coal and iron working have all been discussed in depth. eg prior threads re tinworking

Back to your researches, in truth it's me who is truly in awe of you !
My family have hardly any old photos never mind original documents, I'm really pleased for you that you still have your family's original letters and certificates, a great treasure.

All the very best with your researches, thanks for posting,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, yes I am looking for a Jenny Savidge who posted on here about three years ago, I saw that she was looking for records of the same people as I have been looking for. Apparently our grandparents may have been brother and sister and it would be great to try to find out a bit more of our ancestry. Thank you for your reply, I hope that I can catch up with this lady sometime to widen my knowledge of our family tree.
Thank you again, Huw Davies

New Weir, Whitchurch = Symonds Yat !

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Sunday, June 29, 2014, 20:38 (3794 days ago) @ MPGriffiths

Yes, you're right again MPG,
John Simmonds' birthplace "New Weir" was indeed just south of Whitchurch on the Wye, not far from Lydbrook and more precisely and rather appropriately at Symonds Yat !. This was an important centre of industry many decades before John worked there.
http://www.overlookingthewye.org.uk/index.php/hidden-industry/new-weir-forge/

This Map shows the area, http://www.forest-of-dean.net/index.php/resources/15-maps/95-new-weir-symonds-yat-1890
Some general photos of the Yat area http://www.forest-of-dean.net/index.php/symonds-yat

More history ref the New Weir ironworks/forge here
http://www.historic-images.co.uk/herefordshire/symonds-yat

John's wife Anne was probably born at Marstow, just a mile or so north of Whitchurch.

Thanks S, and especially for clarifying it's Whitchurch in Herefordshire, not the one near Cardiff (as I tend to think first of !), or indeed in Shropshire, or Hants, or ....

I am looking for a Jenny Savidge who was looking for records of her great grandparents from Lydbrook in Gloucestershire, I think that her grandfather John Simmonds may be my grandmother's (annie simmonds) brother. Can anyone help me trace this lady?

Hi Jenny, my name is Huw Davies and I am from Resolven near Neath in South Wales. I have been looking to find some information on my grandmothers family as no-one in the family seems to have much info at all, it would be nice to find some distant cousins out there. My grandmother was Annie Simmonds from Lydbrook and I believe that she had a sister called Harriet and I think there is a possibility that your grandfather/great grandfather John may have been her brother. I believe that the family moved to Aberdare where Annie met my grandfather and started their own family. I would love to be able to share any info with you or any member of your family if it is at all possible. I am contactable by email.

cheers, Huw

Fantastic. Hi Jenny it feels great to have finally made contact with you, I'm sure we could have lots of family info to share and I look forward to learning more from your great granddad's side. It is quite amazing how a family tree expands over the generations and I am fascinated with each and every new branch that I come across. I shall look for your email address and make contact with you ( I really don't know where to start but I'm sure we can find that starting point somewhere.) I shall email you soon with an introduction of who I am and a brief explanation of my family (and heading back a few generations until we can match up our heritage).
I look forward to what's in store. Cheers, Huw Davies
