Charles DAVIS - 1826 Taynton

by MPGriffiths @, Thursday, July 17, 2014, 11:11 (3776 days ago) @ davointassie

There are previous threads on this Davis family of Glasshouse Hill from davointassie

Taynton is in (East Dean) - 1861 census

Gloucestershirebdm

Charles DAVIS married Sophia YATES at Cheltenham St Mary 1847 - only the marriage certificate would show Charles' father's name

- and looking at the births i.e. DAVIS/YATES this is the correct census return

1851 Census Newnham - Back Lane

John YATES - Widower - age ? Gardener, born Westbury on Severn
John YATES - son - 33 - Shoe maker - born ditto
Sophia DAVIS - daughter - 35, Stay maker, born Frampton on Severn * Widow by the 1871 census
Charles DAVIS - son-in-law - 25 - - Harnefs Maker - born East Dean
Susan DAVIS - grand-d - 2 - born Newnham
Ann DAVIS - grand - d - 1 - born Newnham

---

Fod records, burial at Newnham 3 August 1867, Charles DAVIS, age 42

I think this might be him in 1861,

Newnham St, Newnham

Charles DAVIS, Head, Mar, 35, Saddler, b. East Dean
Sophia, Wife, 43, Stay maker, b. Frampton on Severn
Susan, Daur, 12, b. Newnham
Ann, Daur, 10, b. Newnham
Elizabeth, Daur, 7, b. Newnham

GR transcribed the name as DAVID but the original is clearly DAVIS

Charles DAVIS + Sarah WILKES nee PAINE

by MPGriffiths @, Saturday, August 16, 2014, 10:22 (3746 days ago) @ davointassie

???????

This seems plausible

Marriage at Littledean - 1 May 1859

Charles DAVIES - full Bachelor, labourer, residence: Little Dean
father: William DAVIES - labourer
married
Sarah WILKES - full age, Widow
residence: Extra-parochial
father: Giles PAINE, labourer
by banns

witnesses: William JONES and Ann WILKES

---

1861 Census, Little Dean (no luck yet on 1871 census for Charles or Sarah)
District 2 Page 17 of 24 (very faint to read)

Think it is Silver Street - which is mentioned in later pages of the census returns

Charles DAVIS - 33 (c1828) - Coal Miner, born (on Ancestry transcribed as Taunton, Gloucestershire, but reads Taynton)
Sarah DAVIS - 45 - born Upleadon
Charles WILKES - 16 - wife's son - (Glosbdm - Charles WILKS/Elizabeth WEST - 1867, Littledean, St Ethelbert)
Fanny WILKES - 9 - wife's daughter **

---

? as mentioned before: burial at Newnham - 3 August 1867, Charles DAVIS aged 42 (=c1825)

* Charles & Elizabeth WILKS daughter Lucy christened 1869 at Cinderford

---

Fod Records, Marriage at Littledean - 23 February 1867 - Charles WILKES (father James, butcher) married Elizabeth WEST
witnesses: Thomas BAMFORD and Fanny WILKES

Fanny WILKS married Thomas BAMFORD at Glos. St Mary de Lobe 1869 (Glosbdm)

1871 Census East Dean

BAMFORD

Thomas - 27 - Innkeeper, born Little Dean
Fanny - 19 - born Tibberton

--

Fod Records - Baptism at Upleadon

27 August 1815

Sarah PAINE, parents Giles (labourer) & Hester

residence: Upleadon Green Old Farm

---
Fod Records

Marriage at Newent - 17 September 1839

Sarah PAINE married James WILKES

---

James WILKES - tree on Ancestry

born 1816 in Tibberton and children with Sarah

Sarah Ann -1841
Emma - 1842
Charles - 1844
William - 1848
Fanny - 1852 (Fod records Fanny WILKS - 1852, Tibberton, parents James & Sarah)

--

1851 Census, TIBBERTON, Glos

WILKS

James - 34, Farm Labourer, born Tibberton (Glosbdm - burial at Newent 1858, James WILKS age 42)
Sarah - 34 - born Upleadon
Emma (line through age on census)
Charles - 6
William WILKS - 70 - born Tibberton
Jemima - 61 - born Bulley
Sarah (?) - grand-daughter

Charles DAVIS + Sarah WILKES nee PAINE

APPERLEY/PAYNE/WILKS/DAVIS

by MPGriffiths @, Sunday, August 17, 2014, 07:44 (3745 days ago) @ davointassie

previous thread on Aldridge/Payne/Davi(e)s

http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=32256

and then we have

Marriage at Taynton - 7 October 1808

Giles PAIN (father of Sarah who married James WILKES - then wife of Charles DAVIES)

Batchelor, residence: Tainton

married Esther WELLS

Spinster, Tainton

by banns

witnesses: mark of John APPERLEY and Mary WELLS

--

The website

APPERLEY

http://www.wells-genealogy.org.uk

by looking at the APPERLEY section - i.e. birth 1850-1899 - the WILKS are also mentioned (from Newent)

+ Gloucester Goal records including Peter APPERLEY of Newent

APPERLEY/PAYNE/WILKS/DAVIS
