I'm searching for any information on Andrew Butcher (1773-1838)prior to his marriage.

He Married May Millard at Corse in 1800 (The only entry in FOD records)

Died 1838 and buried at Eldersfield.

His wedding details list him as of the parish of Eldersfield but I can find no trace of him in the Eldersfield registers prior to his marriage. His descendants lived in the Corse, Hartpury, Ashleworth, Eldersfield area which is not only right on the border of the FOD area but also straddles the Gloucestershire/Worcestershire border as well.

His family surname from 1840's onward became BOUCHER which is the French version of Butcher so unsure if he was a Boucher who became Butcher thanks to a French speaking parson or visa versa.

? When William BROADSTOCK married Mary CHANDLER by Licence at Corse - 24 February 1801 - witnesses: Ann ? PLAYNE & Sarah BUTCHER.

Mary BROUDSTOCK is on the 1851 census born Corse - and her baptism again states: No parish records etc. etc. Bishops Transcripts have been used.

There would appear to be only two children of Andrew and Mary BUTCHER - is this correct, as it seems quite a gap.

i.e. Wm - 30 January 1803 at Eldersfield and Mary - 25 December 1810 at Corse.

Lydia's Inventory is on Ancestry: she is a Spinster - will read through, but appears to be very comfortably off - and has a cottage, many, many possessions, including 44 pewter dishes + farming stock etc.

Her brother, Richard YOUNG of Corse, Pig Cutter - seems to have gone after her death and sworn he is her brother.

Thank you for all these leads it gives me plenty to dig into next time I'm in the records office.

This all revolves around a 5 mile semi circle with Ashleworth as the centre point and of course west of the river.

The Broadstocks were active in Hartpury, and Corse and they all seemed to marry brides called Sarah
First was James who married Sarah Gibbs for Redmarly in 1801 at Hartpury and had 9 children baptised at Hartpury
Then in 1828 William married Sarah Tompkins in Gloucester but was the blacksmith at Corse and had 6 children baptised.

As said Hartpury,Corse, Ashleworth & Hasfield are all neighbouring villages or hamlets in Gloucestershire as is Eldersfield but that's over the border in Worcestershire. Where one village ended and the next started was often fairly vague.

I have also only discovered two children for Andrew Butcher as you said; William & Mary.

Of Mary I can find no trace other than her baptism at Corse (even though the family seems to have been based in Eldersfield)

William Butcher married Mary Sheppard at Hartpury in 1829 and had 3 offspring

Walter Henry Boucher 1833=1893

William Joseph Boucher 1836 -1898

Ellen Augusta Boucher 1840 - 1905 married name Dobbins.

It was at this time the surname was being spelt in various ways, Butcher, Boucher, Boutcher

The Lydia Young - Andrew Butcher case will make some interesting reading; at the time she would have been 43; he 34. If the cased was found against Andrew and he served time it may explain the wide gap between his children.

This John HOULDER witnesses another couple of marriages and do wonder if this surname could possibly be BOUCHER????

Looking at the Licence on Fod records - Thomas BROWN was aged 26 and Sarah LANE aged 36 and a Widow.

Is there a LANE/BUTCHER/BOUCHER/BUTTLER etc connection

? John BUTCHER is a witness at Ashelworth - 5 Jan 1778 when Thomas BUBB married Anne PEAR

What I am fairly certain off is:

Giles Millard is either Mary's Father (died 1802) or her brother (1770-1841)

Mary's Mother was Jane Lane (1748-1818). While searching for Sarah Lane, if I remember, there was one who was sister to Jane and as far as I could find unmarried in 1802.
There was one Sarah baptised in Hartpury in 1756, another in Corse in 1779

Jane lane was baptised in Ashleworth 1748 Parents William and Mary (what else)
There is a Sarah Lane Baptised in Hartpury 1756 Parents William and Mary

The Lane family is one of the long established and widely distributed families of the area, in fact they are still there now.

I stay fairly sceptical about misspellings Butcher/Boucher is English and French versions of the same meanings, I have also found Boutcher which I've linked and Bouchier which I have not.

When Andrew Butcher's son William married Mary Sheppard at Hartpury in 1838 he is named as William Coucher living at Staunton (at that time in Worcestershire) -*FOD records

This is a completely agricultural community and this is the time of the Enclosures and all the disruption that caused.

Long time local families married to various Bouchers/Butchers include Lane, Sheppard, Banks, Price & Dobbins

A John Lane 30 Married Sarah Powell at Upleadon in 1754 Sarah's age is given as 30

A John Lane was buried at Ashleworth in 1763

Allowing for a little licence when a lady came to declare her age (6 years or so) This would leave Widow Sarah Lane available to marry Thomas Brown in 1765.

Widower John Lane did not marry his Sarah (Edwards) until 1768

The area is also well covered by transcribed census thanks to the Gadfield Elm Chapel

Family legend has it that they originated from the Frampton on Severn area. There were about seven different Boucher families in Gloucester mainly centred around the docks area and Alney Island barge pool. From there it's a quick trip up river to Ashleworth.
