Lane End Coalway does not in itself exist any more as it has been subsumed into a larger Coalway, similarly, Broadwell Lane End, Littledean Lane End, Mitcheldean Lane End etc, all on the ridge around Coleford. Assuming your relatives were in Coleford throughout their lives, a look at the Coleford Cemetery Records might reveal a little extra. Get stuck!, get back with some more detail and I'll see if I can find anything else.

Sorry, I should have said that a map of that period is available here in Coleford which I feel will contain the various Lane Ends on it

Coalway is a village about 1 mile from the centre of Coleford. This link will take you to Google Maps: http://bit.ly/1wr2klt

My father was born and brought up here and, in the 1911 Census, the family address was given as Eden Wall, Lane End. I remember the house well as one of his brothers was still living there in the early 1950s. If you access Google Maps and find Coalway follow the road, still called Edenwall, towards Milkwall. A bus stop is shown named Palmer's Flat. That is where the house was (still is) and it seems to be that collection of houses that formed Lane End. To the best of my recollection Palmer's Flat is actually a little way further along where the road flattened out (a clue in the name I guess!) and near Gorsty Knoll. The road becomes Station Road as it leads to what would have been Milkwall station on the Coleford to Lydney line.

thanks for the reply,
Lane End may have finished/started where you are suggesting but I've heard that it also runs to Broadwell. I will have to come down to Gloucester archives and digs around for some old maps I think, it's just getting the time to do it that's the problem.
Anyway thanks again for the input much appreciate it.

You're correct in that there are a number of Lane Ends in the Forest and that one of them is/was Broadwell Lane End. I've always believed that it is the area round the crossroads at Broadwell. Indeed the school was called Lane End School. I'm in touch with an old friend who was born there to see if his recollections are the same. Meantime a couple of websites that you might or might not be aware of and which might be helpful.

Coleford Cemetery Records are not available online, however, I do have a full digitised set on a memory stick, give me the info and I will see what I can find for you.

You might find a map or two in the Coleford Area Partnership Offices - upstairs in the Main Place, Railway Drive, Coleford (library building). This office is manned by volunteers but you could always call by phone on 01594 836469.

Coleford Cemetery Records are available online on this site in our Parish Records section because we did the transcription work for GA and donated the digitised copy to the Town council.
