John Whittingham & Isabella

Sorry to be the bearer of possibly bad news - this John Whittingham could be the one who was executed at Gloucester Gaol for murder.

from notes
John Whittingham was possibly the John Whittingham, labourer living at Howle Hill, married to Isabella. Their children: George bp 7 May 1814; Milicent bp 12 Feb 1816; and James bp 16 Oct 1817 [to Isabella, widow of John, Howl Hill]. Isabella then had 2 children by William Baker, a labourer and mason of Bulls Hill; John bp 4 Mar 1820; Frederick bp 31 Dec 1821. In 1841 and 1851, Isabella Whittingham is on both census returns as a widow living with her son Frederick.
'The Murder of Parish Constable Henry Thompson of Ruardean'
4 men were convicted of murdering him including John Whittingham. John Whittingham from Howle in the Forest of Dean was arrested on Wednesday 18 May 1817 in a barn near Ross on Wye and was hanged in Gloucester prison.

It is difficult to establish which John Whittingham this relates to as there are several. The references to the murder do not give an age for him.
However, if one assumes that he was of a similar age to his wife Isabella and not some 20+ years older, then he could be the John bp at Walford in 1791 to John and Margaret Whittingham, making him a grandson of Walter Whittingham & Ann [Harris] from whom I am descended.
There is no burial record for John Whittingham, as at this time, it was the custom for murderers following hanging at Gloucester Gaol - his body would have been sent for dissection and not returned to his parish nor buried within Gloucester thus denying a family burial. This was particularly harsh considering that his wife Isabella was expecting his last child, James. The PR bp Index simply states that James was the son of Isabella Whittingham, her husband deceased.
The circumstances of the murder seem to be that John Whittingham was one of a group of men including 2 Draper brothers who set out to 'rescue' Mrs Draper from a local strong-house pending her trial. In the course of the rescue, Thompson, a local policeman was killed.

If you subsequently discover any further information to verify or negate the above, please advise.
kind regards

re marriage for John Whittingham & Margaret [possible parents of John Whittingham convicted 1817]
No idea on marriage at all... have checked general & advanced search of FOD
index and Familysearch. I think it possible that Margaret went on to marry
John Morris following death of first husband.
re John Whittingham who was subject of the proceedings in 1817... I have
conjectured that he was the John married to Isabella, if he was around her
age and died before birth of James in 1817 as noted in the PR. I have been
trying to find any references to John's identity & direct relatives in any
of the details of the trial, but I have only found circumstances.
