ROOKE Charles RAMC

With Reference to Record ID 4689.
Note 2 is in error, this man does NOT feature in the quoted list (I have a copy of the original), however, ROOKE Thomas does.

Who is/was Charles Rooke - RAMC?

I have found a Charles Rooke (18591) (Worcestershire Regiment) of Coalway Lane End, probably the brother of Thomas Rooke. This man was later transferred to the Royal Engineers - medal card indicates additional service numbers as WR295657 and 367325. Could this be the Charles Rooke referred to?

On the memorial at Broadwell Memorial Hall, C Rooke is quoted as RAMC but I suspect that this may have been a misunderstanding. Anyone out there who knows the real story please give details.

I belong to Ancestry, Find my Past and The Genealogist, each of which has qualities not always available on the other(s). The Broadwell memorial hall has Charles Rooke listed as Royal Army Medical Corps.

The Worcestershire Regt/Royal Engineers Charles = the one you refer to = is also known to me and I think that there may be some confusion regarding his service as at some time he was in an RAMC hospital and it is possible that the family have been confused by this (hope I am wrong!!). I also feel that this is the brother of Thomas Alban Rooke of Broadwell Lane Ends, who died during WW1.

I have found another Charles but this one is not the one I am looking for (62918 RAMC).

I am aware of the St Briavels Rooke - I think that is a descendant of the Rooke of Gibraltar fame - but thanks anyway

I am related to many of the Rook family (if not all of them) from the Forest of Dean.
Charles and Thomas Alban Rook(e) are the sons of Urban Rook(e) who lived from 1859-1931. Their mother was Mary Ann (nee Haris) 1888-1914.
Thomas Alban Rook(e) was born in 1895 and according to my research he was killed in action in Greece in WW1 and was buried in Salonika/Thesalonika. He died on 30th October 1916. He was in the Royal Worcester Regiment and was a corporal by the time he died. However, his brother, Charles was born in 1896 but I do not think that he died in WW1, I have him living until the 1960s.

I have other records of other Rook(e) relatives and I think some were in the Royal Army Medical Corps. I will have a look to see if it's another one.

Thank you for this information which confirms my suspicions that Charles Rooke RAMC did survive the war and married post war. I have long thought that this was one and the same man who died in the 1960's, although I can find nothing to substantiate this. It is possible that Charles Rooke's father/mother or some other were keen that since he had served during the war his name be added to the memorial which is possibly where the confusion arose.

As a descendant of the Rook family I would be pleased if you could confirm whether there is a connection between my branch and Vice Admiral George Rooke. It seems a great coincidence that they share the same surname but I have not, so far, found any conclusive evidence to link him with my Rooks apart from them all living in the same area. However I think I have found some other naval connections with the family.

for the second time today I find myself reading forum threads about British military men, all stirring stuff, and all very interesting to me.
Apologies for not being conversant with the above Rooke family lines, I haven't studied their trees at all, and so may have missed an important post, but I'd like to try and help with your query. Please can you clarify why you think the FoD/Broadwell Rook family maybe related to Sir George Rook ?. Does another forum thread mention this ?. I ask as presumably you think they have a link to Kent ?. I see Charles Rooke has links to Essex, near Kent, plus India which suggests a military family, but any more clues would be helpful, thanks. I ask as the various online references all indicate Sir George Rooke was born and died in Canterbury, eg
"was heir to, was the son of Sir William Rooke, the descendant of an ancient and honourable family in the county of Kent, and born in the year 1650."

Sorry if I have been ambiguous but I do not believe there to be a link between the Broadwell Rooke's and those descendants of Admiral Rooke, one of whom appears to be from The St Briavels area but is definitely NOT the Rooke that I am seeking information on.

Glad to try. I do not believe there to be a link between the Broadwell Rooke's and the descendants of Admiral Rooke, however, there does appear to be a Charles Rooke in the WW1 casualty lists from the St Briavels Area which seems to be one of the Admiral's lineage.
