GENUKI Gloucestershire: Making connections (General)

Hi everyone

This is to introduce myself as the new maintainer of the Gloucestershire pages on GENUKI.

I started revising and updating the pages at the beginning of the year and I am aiming to make sure that GENUKI has links to all the main online sources including this excellent resource. Everyone is very welcome to suggest improvements for the GENUKI pages and particularly to let me know of new links that should be included. Please click through the contact link on the GENUKI page.

It would be helpful to have a separate brief discussion - possibly offline from the Forum - about the best way to be fairly systematic about the links between GENUKI and the Trust and to make sure that we guide people as quickly and easily as possibly to potential material of interest to them. I attempted to send a message on the contact page but I am not clear whether it got through. Perhaps the admin or whoever is most appropriate could email me separately.

Regards

Paul Evans

Dear Paul,

As a frequent and extremely grateful user of this site's resources, I suggest that in promoting it you should be explicit about it's geographical boundaries. I've seen comments on other family history sites suggesting that coverage of Gloucestershire is poor for parish records, so it only seems fair to be clear about how far FOD FHT extends, and where the boundaries end.

Separately, I think I've read on the 'Who Do You Think You Are?' website that more Gloucestershire parish records may be coming online via one of the big providers, so you may want to investigate exactly what that will (or will not) cover.

Good luck in your endeavours, Janey

Dear Janey

Thanks of this very helpful comment. I have just started on the process on making the connection from GENUKI by expanding the Forest of Dean page there to give an overall indication of the availability of parishes on FOD and I will be following up with the individual parishes.

I will look out for more information on the availability of registers. This may be part of the work with the FHS. I have noticed that both Find My Past and Ancestry are often a little coy about saying exactly what the coverage of their register entries are.
