Oliver Malson(m) (General)

by DavidHankey @, Great Easton, Leicestershire, Monday, March 23, 2015, 16:25 (3527 days ago)

b 1872 to George Malson & Hannah Clutterbuck and according to the 1911 Census married Kate in 1892 but I have scoured various records and cannot find a marriage at all.

What was Kate's surname?

Any help, as per usual, would be greatly appreciated, David

Many thanks for this. In the deepest recesses at the back of mind this rings a bell, however, I think it was discounted at the time.

The spelling of Oliver's surname as Mawson hasn't help and the distance of Aston to Abenhall is over 50 miles so I still have doubts about this being correct.

Oliver was a miner living at East Dean at the time of his daughter, Elsie's, baptism in 1898 and by the time of the baptisms of his sons, Oliver & George Felix in 1901 he was a mason.

On top of this Kate's birthplace is given as Aston, Oxfordshire whereas the 1911 Census states East Dean, Gloucestershire.

It seems I'll have to give this some more thought.

As mentioned before, Ancestry has transcribed the actual copy of the Banns read at Ruardean - in 1893 and Oliver MALSOM, bachelor is quite clear - marrying Kate Killmaster JUSTEN, Spinster - Banns also published at Swinford Oxon.

Can understand confusion re MAWSON - however the handwritten L of Malsom and the S are very distinct.

There is also a website re: Howse family tree which is very detailed:

http://www.howesfamilies.com/index.php

Kate Eva's mother being Ann KILLMASTER - Kate Eva adopted by by Edwin David JUSTER and Charlotte Ann HOWSE

Ann sailed to Rockhampton Queensland 7 December 1873 - had a daughter Clara born 12 October 1875 and Clara died 29 October.

Ann's parents were: Robert KILLMASTER - 1822 and Letita HOWSE - 1826

Oliver Malsom and Kate Killmaster were my great grandparents. Oliver was considerably older than Kate. He was a stonemason and we think it likely that this work took him to Swinbrook where he met and married Kate.

Kate was the illegitmate daughter of Anne Killmaster who it seems likely abandoned her to start afresh in Australia a few months after her birth. Can find no trace of Anne after a breach of promise court case in Brisbane.

Oliver and Kate had 5 children Dora, Elsie, Oliver, George Felix and my grandfather Illis Mark (recorded as Ellis)

Thanks for your reply and confirming the names of their children.

It does seem Kate was abandoned by her mother and adopted by Edwin Juster & Charlotte Howse.
