Hi there, Im seeking help on an old Mortgage I am trying to research, it is dated
7th of May 1757 and is between Barrow Laurence & Robert Raikes ,Stationer & Printer of Gloucestershire and concerns property in the Lydney St Briavels area. The document is very large 85 by 70 cms and consists of 4 pages . my eyes are not so good now ,but Barrow Laurence appears to have lived in "Bream Lodge " and there is reference to a Lodge Manor Estate .Robert Raikes left Ladybellegate House in Glouster in 1757 the year he took over "The Gloucestershire Press" And I am trying to establish where he lived before his Marriage, any assistanch would be appreciated.

The following page from Victoria County History should prove a great help.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol5/pp46-84
There is a paragraph commencing as follows:
"An estate, comprising land in the north of Aylburton tithing, in Bream tithing of Newland, and in St. Briavels, was based on a house at the parish boundary that was called at various times PRIOR'S MESNE LODGE, BREAM LODGE, and PRIOR'S LODGE."
and includes the following sentence:
"but later occupants of the estate, though not necessarily owners of all rights in it, were Mary's son Powlett Lawrence (d. by 1756), his brother Barrow Lawrence (d. 1770),"
This tells us that the property was occupied by Barrow Lawrence and I therefore assume that he was the mortgagor (Borrower) and Robert Raikes, the mortgagee (Lender).

Thank you, MPGGriffiths, Ive downloaded that document, theres a great story building up here, I have no connection with these families, i purchased this & several other documents at a car boot sale for a couple of pounds,a few of years ago, I have researched one & sent it to New Zealand to a person with a family connection .in exchange they made a payment to the Earthquake Fund. once completed I hope to reunite this one, I can now concentrate on My Palfrey Family as through this site I have found that some lived in the Forest Of Dean Area.
Thanks all for your help.
