george nurse beard (General)
george nurse beard was a lieutenant in the Great War and was related to Edwin Beard of the Tinworks. I have failed to find out what regiment he served with although I have anewspaper report showing he was wounded and hospitalised.
Can anyone help?

It is possible that this relates to another George Nurse Beard who was born at Saul, Gloucestershire in 1858. He was resident in Bedminster in 1901 and Clifton Wood, Bristol in 1911 when he was described as a House Agent and Collector.
George Nurse Beard son of Edwin was just 15 and at school at the time of the 1911 Census.

George BEARD (Lieutenant South Wales Borderers)
Yes as unusual as the name is there are two of the same name. I suspect there may be a link.
I have the 1901 and 1911 censuss and have found all the available information regarding his unit.
The only George Beard I have found with the Sout Wales Borderersso far was a Corporalnot a Lieutenant.
No trace of the Lieutennat at the National Archives.
Searches of the London Gazette showing his appointmenst as a Lieuteant so far have shownnothing (although that is likely due to the poor character recognition for print from 1916).
I have a number of newspaper items in which he is named but it wouldseem that his service record was lost in WWII.
Was his middle name taken after the Nurse family at the works??

No, these don't work either. They may be intentionally blocked. I Googled Redbrook House Redbrook Gloucestershire, then Images. Quite near the top is image of tinplate works, early 19th Century perhaps. Scroll down further and find Redbrook House circa 1900/10 May well be Beard family standing out front.
The links provided in previous posts have been amended and should now work.

From the photograph of Redbrook House 1910, I suggest the three people were George Nurse Beard 14, Catherine Jane Beard 46 and Brenda aged 12. What do others think.
george nurse beard
It's been said before - don't rely solely on newspaper reports.
I think in this case the rank of George Beard was incorrectly stated, since there is no officer service file after 1913 for a George Nurse Beard or plain George Beard at the National Archives, or any Beard, South Wales Borderers; there are no notifications of military appointments found in the London Gazette for George Nurse Beard or G. N. Beard ("gazetting" as a 2nd Lieutenant was usually announced with the officer's full name, and subsequent promotions, appointments, relinquishing commission, etc. with initials and surname); there is no listing of G.N. or G. Beard in Army Lists for March 1916, October 1917, and August 1918 (listing of officers and their various Regiments or Corps).
There is no record of WW1 campaign medals being issued to George Nurse Beard (although this is not conclusive proof since an officer was required to claim the medals).
The only record of WW1 campaign medals to a George Beard of The South Wales Borderers is to Corporal George Beard 35365 2nd Battalion.
There is no surviving service record for him.
It needs further research from some other source or sources - I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Whilst George appears in the 1911 Census as George Nurse Beard the name registered at birth was George James Henry Beard.

That said I cannot find this name in WW1 records.

From this it would appear that he was promoted from 2nd Lieut. to Lieut.

Perhaps a reprieve for Lt. Beard. Newspaper just got the Regiment wrong. SWB and Mon. Regt. undoubtedly recruited from same general area which encroached into FoD. A brother of my grandfather (Soudley, East Dean)was a volunteer in the Royal Monmouthshie Royal Engineers Militia for several years in the 1890's. (3,000 officers and OR's, how about that).

The Gloucester Citizen reported that George James Henry Beard was buried at Newland Church on Tuesday, February 5 1929.
There are several reports ref. his death and the intervention of the Coroner (the latter being as a result of the certifying Doctor mentioning the war wound of 1916 on the death certificate). A subsequent post mortem confirmed that death was due to natural causes.
Too much to transcribe.

There is a medal index card on Ancestry for a Capt. G. J. H. Beard, Monmouthshire Regt.
He was promoted Lieutenant on 18.7.1916
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29670/supplement/7083
Resigned his commission in 2nd Bn. Monmouthshire Regt. 24.2.1921, and retained the rank of Lieutenant. He would have been placed in the Reserve of Officers and liable to recall if required.

Promoted Captain, whilst in the Reserve of Officers, 17.6.1922

He would have still been in the Reserve of Officers at the time of his death.
