Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me with information about my great grandmother Elizabeth Charlotte Newall, she was baptism in East Dean, March 1861 in Lea, Parish Chapel.

She married my great grandfather Charles Butcher in the Church of St.Lukes on 13th October 1879.

Her place of residence is shown as East Dean, her father being shown on the marriage certificate as William Newell, laborer.

I would be grateful for any information about the Newell/Newall family from the Forrest of Dean area

Regards David Gould

Maybe this is a possible scenario:-

For reference, from FODFHT

Record_ID: 116671
Entry_Number: 431
Year: 1861

Occupation: Labourers daughter

From GR 1871 Census, Paradise Buildings, Holmer, Hereford

Thomas DAVIES, Head, Mar, 45, Labourer, b. Glostershire, East Dean
Ann, Wife, Mar, 49, Glostershire, Winchcombe
William, Son, Un, 14, Scholar, Glostershire, East Dean,
Elizabeth NEWELL, Grand daur, Un, 10, Scholar, Glostershire, East Dean

On the face of it (and neglecting complications such as step-children) Elizabeth NEWELL would have to be the child of a daughter of Thomas DAVIES. So perhaps Mary Ann NEWELL was actually Mary Ann DAVIS when the child was born?

From GR 1861 Census, East Dean, Holy Trinity

Thomas DAVIS, Head, Mar, 33, Stone Quarrier, b. East Dean, Glos,
Ann, Wife, Mar, 37, Winchcombe
Mary Ann , Daughter, Un, 19,East Dean, Glos.
Christopher Thos, Son, Un, 10, East Dean, Glos.
James, Son, Un, 7, East Dean, Glos
William, Son, Un, 4, East Dean, Glos
Elizabeth, Daughter, 2m, East Dean, Glos.

Since the name NEWELL was taken up perhaps Mary Ann did eventually marry a William NEWELL. This is a good candidate,

Thanks so much for the help, I had found some of the same info but as you suggest it was a little conflicting. The marriage though I had not seen previously, thats a great new lead to check.

I would under the circumstances agree that it would appear Elizabeth was born out of wedlock and that Mary as you suggested married the father later.

Again thank you for all the effort, I have found the records here of immeasurable help as both my maternal and paternal ancestors came from the Forrest of Dean.

Gratefully yours, David Gould
