Help interpreting Marriage Record, please. (General)

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Friday, July 08, 2016, 21:00 (3053 days ago)

Hi all,
I'm having something of a brain-fade cum senior moment today, and despite having seen records like this several times in the past, I'm now struggling to interpret a Marriage Record off GlosBMD. Please can someone put me out of my misery ?

The marriage record displays on GlosBMD as;

Marriage Details

Number of entries matching criteria entered: 2

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
GITTINGS Victor Richard FISHER Florence Emily Gloucester Gloucester Rural Register Office 1943 6 76
GITTINGS Victor Richard ASTON Florence Emily Gloucester Gloucester Rural Register Office 1943 6 76

My own preliminary tree interpretes this record as Victor (born Redmarley aka Gloster District 1915) married Florence Fisher nee Aston. However I'm now beginning to wonder if its Aston nee Fisher, as I'm struggling to trace Florence's likely birth record (ie born Gloster area abt 1915 ??) under either surname, using FreeBMD, GlosBMD and the FoD PRs ?.

Thanks in advance for any info please about Florence, Jeff.

Thanks a lot Mike.

Yes that first marriage is what initally gave me her name (Victor's in my family tree, Florence is the "unknown quantity" for me).

Sadly not the rarest name as you've possibly seen, but thanks so much for looking, yes Birmingham seems possible wrt Redmarley, I guess that Aston is a fairly common surname in the Midlands (Aston University, Villa, etc ??).

Since my post I've luckily confirmed via a completely separate enquiry, that when GlosBMD gives a Marriage with two bride's surnames, the first/top line of the record as displayed is the bride's surname at time of that marriage. The second/bottom line is actually her maiden name. Not displayed as clear as it could and perhaps should be in my opinion, ah well..

Hence equating this to Florence's record posted earlier, it appears that she was indeed born as Florence ASTON, as per your post of course.

Unless perhaps she had been married TWICE before marrying Victor ?. But if that happened presumably? GlosBMD would display her name against THREE surnames ?. Or would it ?.

Many thanks again, the search goes on, Jeff.

PS ref FreeBMD etc I've had lots of fun (actually bad luck!) tonight finding Marriage Records containing odd spelling errors in surnames, so making my mind even more addled. Think I'll sleep on it and all will be clearer.

Is this entry from the 1939 Register of any help to you?
Fisher Household (4 People)
246 St Benedicts Road , Birmingham C.B., Warwickshire, England

FIRST NAME(S) LAST NAME(S) DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS SCHEDULE SCHEDULE SUB NUMBER
Florence E Gittings (Fisher) 04 Dec 1910 Female House Duties Married 283 2
William T C Fisher 03 Oct 1905 Male Capstan Lathe Hand Married 283 1
Emily D K Aston 23 Oct 1879 Female House Duties Married 283 3
Edward H Aston 19 Apr 1908 Male Shop Assistant Grocery Married 283 4

This gives Florence's date of birth as 4 December 1910 and points to this entry from FreeBMD:
Births Dec 1910
FISHER Florence E Bridge 2a 867

or this

Births Mar 1911
Fisher Florence Birmingham 6d 76

I suspect the latter and we have this entry in the 1911 Census which is a good fit:

Name Relation to Head Birth Date Age Gender Marital Status Occupation Birth Place Address
Edward Fisher Head 1881 30 Male Married Cycle Tyres Maker Birmingham, Warwickshire, England 16 C 1 House Gladstone St Aston
Daisy Fisher Wife 1882 29 Female Married Birmingham, Warwickshire, England 16 C 1 House Gladstone St Aston
Daisy Fisher Daughter 1908 3 Female Birmingham, Warwickshire, England 16 C 1 House Gladstone St Aston
Sidney Fisher Son 1906 5 Male Birmingham, Warwickshire, England 16 C 1 House Gladstone St Aston
Florence Fisher Daughter 1910 4/12 Female Birmingham, Warwickshire, England 16 C 1 House Gladstone St Aston

We now attempt to eliminate Florence E Fisher born in Bridge Registration District and find this entry in the 1911 Census:
Name Relation to Head Birth Date Age Gender Marital Status Years Married Occupation Birth Place Address
Edward James Fisher Head 1868 43 Male Married Beaterman Manufacture Of Paper Chartham, Kent 4 Home Cottages, Chartham, Nr Canterbury, Kent
Annie Young Fisher Wife 1868 43 Female Married 19 Laundry Work Ampthill, Bedfordshire 4 Home Cottages, Chartham, Nr Canterbury, Kent

Donald Napier Fisher Son 1909 2 Male Chartham, Kent 4 Home Cottages, Chartham, Nr Canterbury, Kent
Florence Ena Fisher Daughter 1910 6/12 Female Chartham, Kent 4 Home Cottages, Chartham, Nr Canterbury, Kent

and her marriage:

Allen Charles H J Fisher Bridge 2a 3559
Fisher Florence E Allen Bridge 2a 3559

and entry in 1939 Register:

and finally this is the entry for Victor R Gittings:

THANKS ! admin for your help with this, very useful indeed !
Also very interesting for me, as it points to a time when Birmingham was still a centre of industry aka the "workshop of the World", I especially like the cycling links as I've just been catching-up on today's Tour de France. Also for the update re Victor Gittings, his parents were indeed Richard Gittings and Kate(nee Jones).

Also thanks for pointing me even more towards a FindMyPast subscription, given their 1939 Register access. I do seem to spend as much time researching recent ancestors, or their friends, as I do researching the very early ones which I suspect interests most researchers.

Thanks again everyone.

Ref your 1939 Register post

FIRST NAME(S) LAST NAME(S) DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS SCHEDULE SCHEDULE SUB NUMBER
Florence E Gittings (Fisher) 04 Dec 1910 Female House Duties Married 283 2
William T C Fisher 03 Oct 1905 Male Capstan Lathe Hand Married 283 1
Emily D K Aston 23 Oct 1879 Female House Duties Married 283 3
Edward H Aston 19 Apr 1908 Male Shop Assistant Grocery Married 283 4

I've now found Edward Henry Aston born Birmingham on 19.4.1908 on Ancestry, and what looks like a very credible public tree has his mother as Emily Alice K Aston nee Higgs b1879, so as per the 1939 info. This also confirms Florence Fisher was born nee Aston as per my original query.

Interestingly the public tree shows Emily Aston was born in Cranham, which is a hamlet twixt Painswick and Birdlip and the very same area my Wright ancestor came from before moving to Longhope c1850; his grandson married my nan, a Brace from Redmarley, her brother married neighbour Victor Gittings' sister, my dear Aunt Hilda.

The tree shows Emily died in Gloucester Rural district abt the same time I was born in 1962. This suggests she was probably living with her daughter Florence, as my tree shows Florence living in Brockworth (with Victor until his death in 1970) until she died in Gloster District in 1988, her death record exactly confirms her birthdate 4th December 1910 as per the 1939 Register.

THANKYOU !

Hi again Mike, yes thats the family as per the public tree on Ancestry. Interestingly that tree has all Emily's earlier life but nothing in later years, so I'll be contacting the tree's owner to pass on the info we've put together, thanks all.
