John Belcher and Hannah Lyar/Sier, Westbury on Severn

Hi Janet and a warm welcome to the forum !
Have you tried searching this site's Parish Records database ?
Struggling to find either marriage within this site's PRs, but using the Advanced Search for Baptisms can find the following seven Baptisms for John & Hannah which appear relevant to your search. I've also given a few other PRs for each person where they were easily found, sadly my time is limited today. Of course it's quite possible the men especially might have moved/married out of Westbury, maybe Gloucester etc which was easily reachable up the river if not further north.

Year Surname Child Forenames Parent's Forenames Parish Chapel
1763 BELCHER John.John & Hannah. Westbury on Severn
1766 BELCHER Joseph. John & Hannah. Westbury on Severn
1771 BELCHER Benjamin.John & Hannah. Westbury on Severn
1773 BELCHER Richard.John & Hannah. Westbury on Severn
1775 BELCHER Elizabeth.John & Hannah. Westbury on Severn
1777 BELCHER Mary.John & Hannah.Westbury on Severn
1781 BELCHER Sarah.John &Hannah.Westbury on Severn

The full PRs may be found within the database.

Joseph's Marriage & Burial, perhaps ?
I suspect more relevant PRs may be found within the database as well as any I have found.

Elizabeth b1775;

A possible Marriage, altho' bear in mind Westbury is just one port on the River Severn, which in those days was a busy "highway" to nearby villages such as Broadoak, Newnham, Minsterworth and so on. Also Arlingham just across the River may be worth your attention, the site of a busy ferry to Newnham. Here you will find several Belcher PRs in this site's database, as well as those in Westbury. Until quite recent times it was entirely routine for many people to cross the river daily by this ferry, including children for school and suchlike.

For Sarah b 1781,

Sarah b1781; ????

Not at all sure, as like John and Richard etc Sarah is a popular BELCHER name in the Severnside areas, but wonder if this COULD be her marriage ? Hempstead is just south of Gloucester down river towards Elmore, and lies right on the Severn.

Name John Ravenhill
Spouse's Name Sarah Belcher
Event Date 11 Jan 1804
Event Place Hempstead,Gloucester,England

Searching Familysearch for the Marriages you gave, I find this one which is a good fit.

Name John Bellsher
Spouse's Name Hannah Lyar
Event Date 25 Jun 1758
Event Place Arlingham,Gloucester,England

LUCKILY the FoD PR database only has nine spelt "Belsher/Bellsher", and none appear relevant to this family.
The bride's name may be Siar etc, I only have the Familysearch transcript to go by, and I gather they can be inaccurate at times.

---

Still on Familysearch I can also find marriage which closely matches the second one you mentioned. Winchcombe is the opposite end of the county from the Forest, the other side of Gloster and Cheltenham up in the Cotswold hills, renowned in the past for the wool trade but not too many obvious links to the Forest of Dean.
Possibly not your ancestors ?

Name John Belcher
Spouse's Name Susanna Trinton
Event Date 18 Jun 1785
Event Place Winchcomb,Gloucester,England

==========

Back to John Belcher who married Hannah in W-o-S in 1758, there are quite a few Burials of "John Belcher" in W-o-S but could this be your man, the age seems a reasonable fit, suggesting a birthdate abt 1730.

Re-searching this forum for prior posts about the above BELCHERs I find descendants to Benjamin b1771 who went to New Zealand, which I guess you probably know of seeing as you're in Australia ?
See http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=22863

A timely reminder to me that it ALWAYS pays to keep searching and researching this forum for prior posts about every family name, place, occupation and so on...; SO much excellent information has already been discussed in the past.

That prior post seems to suggest that my earlier mention of Arlingham, across the Severn from Westbury, may have been correct. These sites may help further in this respect.

SIER family of Westbury on Severn

by gladys, Monday, February 05, 2018, 21:57 (2476 days ago) @ Jefff

Hi Jeff,

Last Friday gave all your info to my lady for her to read through over the week and she will get back to me how she wants me to continue.

Thank you for all the info it confirmed some of my research into the family. Always good to get a second opinion on Family History.

Again Thanks. Such a terrific sight for re-search glad I joined.

regards, Janet
