Children not on 1911 census (General)

by steval @, Sunday, March 04, 2018, 03:46 (2450 days ago)

Hi can anyone please help. In 1901 James Dickison/Dickinson born 1861 in coleford was listed along with his wife Jane and children Lilly 3 years, Sydney and Nellie both 11 months. In the 1911 census James is listed by himself boarder and widowed. No children listed with him. Any ideas where they would have been put as I cant find them anywhere. I know Nellie married my Uncle in 1920 in Coleford. Many thanks Valerie.

There's a tree on Ancestry that has Lilly living with an aunt and uncle (Teague) in Mountain Ash, Wales. If you search the Wales 1911 census you should find her. Same tree has another daughter, Ethel (B:1907) living with another aunt and uncle (Davies) in same town.

I would search the various other aunts and uncles for Nellie and Sydney though I haven't found them.

There's a Nelly that matches who's listed as adopted but with the same surname as the parents. Could be her. As I understand it, adoptions at the time were informal arrangements and she may have gone back to her original name later.

Children not on 1911 census, Jane/Regina death

by probinson @, S. Oxon, Sunday, March 04, 2018, 15:57 (2449 days ago) @ steval

James' wife listed as 'Jane' is confusing me. Seems her name was Regina. Is Jane an alternative for Regina?

Death record from the GRO...

DICKINSON, REGINA 37
GRO Reference: 1908 J Quarter in PONTYPRIDD Volume 11A Page 278

Note that Free BMD and Ancestry both have the death listed as Reginald not Regina but the index definitely says Regina.

Well spotted sir !

Have heard Regina used several times in respect of Queen Victoria, but never thought abt it's meaning (Latin for Queen, reigning monarch), and I certainly never realised it was used as a name. I guess it might even be used as a female version of Reginald ?

Sometimes pronouced "Rejaina", so can easily believe it becoming Jane in a shortened/pet form, or if misheard by a census official or suchlike.
