Thomas NASH born in 1700s and his descendants (General)
I am trying to fill some gaps in my NASH ancestry. So far i have:
Thomas NASH (birth date unknown, no baptism on FoD) married Anne HARPER (bapt Newland 1742, dtr of William & Elizabeth) at Newland in 1768. He died in 1795, buried at Newland. Unable to find death for Anne NASH. Anyone have any birth/baptism details for Thomas NASH/death details for Anne NASH? I have only identified one offspring. Where there others?
Their son Richard NASH (bapt Newland 1774) married Mary JAMES (b c1783, but 3 baptisms Bream/Newland 1782-5 so unable to identify parents - any ideas?) at Newland 1809. Mary NASH d1854 buried at Newland, Richard NASH d1864 buried at Newland. They had several children but I have only identified a son:
James NASH of Clements End (bapt Bream 1815) married Mary JONES of Clements (baptism Bream 1817) at St Briavels in 1838. Apparently she had inherited Clements Tump, and divided it up over time.
Apparently they had 10 children. Mary NASH d1879 buried at Bream. James NASH d1887 buried at Bream.
- Sarah NASH b1838 married William BAKER b1846 in 1868 (GRO)
- William NASH b1840 married Eliza HORE b1840 at Clearwell n 1862 (FoD)
- Thirza NASH b1843 no baptism on FoD, never married, d1925 buried at Bream (also spelt Therza and Thurza)
- Peter NASH b1845 d1862, buried at Bream
- James Jones NASH b1847. I understand he married Mary TAYLOR (no birth/baptism details) in 1879. Anyone any more details.
- Mary NASH b1850 bapt Clearwell, married George LEWIS b1849 bapt Parkend, at Bream in 1873. Mary LEWIS d1912 buried at Bream, George LEWIS d1923, no burial on FoD.
- Richard NASH b1853 no baptism on FoD married Elizabeth NASH b1854 bapt Clearwell, dtr of John & Elizabeth (Richard and Elizabeth were distantly related) at Bream in 1873. Richard NASH kept the Miners Rest Inn, d1907 buried at Bream Elizabeth NASH d1928 buried at Bream
- Tom NASH b1855 bapt Parkend married Elizabeth ARCHER b1854 (Higham, Suffolk) in Edmonton, Middlesex in 1881. He served in the Metropolitan Police from the 1880s to about 1903. After his police retirement he returned to the Forest, building a house in one of the plots divided earlier by his mother. They had 7 children, the youngest being Muriel Dorothea NASH (who was my grandmother), having married Cyril Egbert MORGAN of Whitecroft in 1920. Both Tom NASH and Elizabeth NASH died in 1919, both buried at Bream
- Adelaide NASH b1856 (the 1856 baptism for Adelaide NASH on FOD has different parents), possibly dying in 1916. I do not think she married and I believe she was also known as Polly. Anybody got any other details?
- Arthur NASH b1857 bapt Parkend. I have no details if married, if there were any children, or when he died.
I would be very grateful if anyone could fill some gaps, or go back any further.

For starters
By checking for Thomas NASH as a witness to a wedding at Newland
19 September 1762
John JONES of Newland, married Anne NASH of Newland by Licence
witnesses: Richad WILLIAMS and the mark of Thomas NASH
Under resources you will find the Licence etc for Anne NASH - who was aged 27, c 1735
---
John JONES was a witness at Thomas NASH's marriage in 1768
and as Thomas NASH had a son Richard - this is probably his brother getting married and again John JONES is a witness
21 November 1767, Newland, Richard Nash, Elizabeth MORSE, witnesses: Richard Williams & John JONES
--
?
Rich(ar)d and Elz NASH - living in Coleford, had a daughter Eleanor NASH, christened at Newland 16 July 1776
?
There is a Elinor NASH of Clearwell, buried at Newland, 7 May 1756 (family names???)
Thomas NASH burial says he was living in Clearwell
More work needs to be done!

Thomas NASH born in 1700s and his descendants
A group of extended Nash cousins around the world has been tracing these Nashes for the past 12 or so years (though we’ve been less active over the past few years, mainly due to other demands on my time, including fatherhood!). We have a forum on Yahoo groups at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/nash_fod/info
We have run into challenges connecting the dots between the various Nashes born in the 1770s and their ancestors. I believe that you may be mixing up two Richard Nashes, one born c1774 and one born c1779.
You mentioned the former, Richard NASH (b 1774), son of Thomas NASH (b c1748 d 1795?) and Ann HARPER. However, we believe that Mary JAMES (b c1783 d 1854) married not that Richard but Richard Nash (b c1779 d 1864), the son of Richard NASH (b c1746) and Mary HARRISON (b c1749), who were themselves married 28-Sep-1767 in Newland.
This Richard NASH (b c1779) and his brothers Thomas (b c1772, d 21-Jun-1825), John (b c1775 d1855, my 4xGgrandfather), Samuel (b ???) and many of their descendants were Freeminers, many of whom worked in Old Sling Pit iron mine and others nearby over several generations.
We believe that Richard NASH (b c1779) and Mary JAMES (b c1783) had a number of offspring, including:
- Ann NASH (b 1810 d 1885, married Isaac James b 1811, m 1841),
- John NASH (b 1812 d 1901),
- Harriet NASH (b 1811 d ???),
- William NASH (b 1813 d 1902),
- James NASH (b 1815 d 1887), whom you mentioned,
- Ruben NASH (b1817 d 1889 married Elizabeth JENKINS b c1820 m 1845),
- George NASH (b 1820 d 1898),
- Eliza NASH (b 1821 d ???),
- Mary Anne NASH (b 1823 d 1847), and
- Susan NASH (b1831 d 1916)
I have traced the descendants of some of these, but have focused mainly on the descendants of my 4xG-grandfather John (b c1775 d 1855)
Further, we believe that the Richard Nash you mentioned (bapt Newland 1774) actually married Elizabeth WINTLE (m. 11-Dec-1806). If memory serves me correctly, that Richard Nash was a baker in Coleford. This Richard died in 1829, not in 1864. I have not traced their descendants, though I probably should in order to keep my Nashes straight!
A group of us got together for a family reunion at the Miners Arms in Sling while I was visiting the Forest of Dean back in 2009 (I live in North Carolina in the US).
Perhaps if you join us on the Yahoo group—and if I can commit the time to get it fired up again—some of our other cousins can help fill in the blanks!

I can track only one Adelaide NASH (parents Emmanuel and Amy) in the area. Her mother’s name was also JONES (as with Arthur NASH). Maybe this is her. Are you saying there was another Adelaide NASH?

Adelaide NASH
I was going by a family tree drawn up some 20 years ago based on memories from family members long since dead, so its accuracy seems very dubious now.
Certainly the documented Adelaide NASH does not appear to have anything to do with James and Mary NASH, so this looks a bit of a dead end now. However, my grandmother (ie James/Mary Nash' granddaughter) did talk about an Aunt Polly that was on her fathers side of the family, but who she was or how she fitted in I have no idea.
It would seem that Adelaide was not in my part of the family.
By the way I did find Adelaide NASH in the 1861 census with her parents Emmanuel & Amey and in the 1871 census:
Adelaide Nash b1856 Parkend servant (in household of Amos & Lavinia Preece, Red House, East Dean, Westbury on Severn
Arthur (J?) NASH b Bream c1857
Thank you and Mike for seeming to get to the bottom of Arthur. This would seem to be him. The 'Jones' was probably a reflection to his mother. I have seen men adding their mother's maiden name to theirs before in my genealogical studies.
Thanks again
Thomas NASH born in 1700s and his descendants
I am a little confused.
This is in reply to several posts.
Matthewtanash says that Richard Nash b1779 was the son of Richard, b1746 and Mary Harrison, b1749 married 1767 in Newland. This marriage is not on FoD, or FamilySearch, but a Richard Nash-Elizabeth Morse marriage Newland 21.11.1767 is in FamilySearch (no fathers’ details) and ancestry (do not subscribe so can’t open the entry).
The only baptism I can find (on FamilySearch) for a Richard Nash baptised in 1779 is Richard Skillicorne/s Nash baptised 2.2.79 in Cowley, which is halfway between Cheltenham and Cirencester on the other side of the Severn from the Dean Forest, with his parents are given as Thomas and Elizabeth. Can this be the right Richard Nash? It seems too far way. If this is not right, where can I find baptisms etc? Was there another Richard Nash baptised in 1779, but where? There is no Richard Nash baptised 1779 on FoD site, or on genealogy/findmypast.
Unfortunately, the marriage details of Richard Nash & Mary James do not give fathers' names, so the connection is unproven.
However, MPGriffiths has the Richard Nash (b1746) who married Elizabeth Morse on 21.11.1767 at Newland as the son of Thomas Nash.
My understanding is:
Thomas Nash, witness to marriage of Anne Nash & John Jones 1762 (is Anne the sister of Thomas?)
Has a son
Richard Nash b1746 marries Elizabeth Morse in Newland 21.11.1767. In FoD and FamilySearch but fathers’ names not stated
or
Richard Nash b1746 marries Mary Harrison in Newland 28.9.1767. In FoD and FamilySearch but fathers’ names not stated
One of these marriages produces a daughter Eleanor b1776 and then a son:
Richard Nash b 1779, marries Mary James b1783 on 2.11.1809. In FoD but fathers’ names not stated. They have 10 children, incliding James, my gggrandfather.
Any ideas which is the right Richard getting married in Newland in 1767?

Hi
Have only looked at yr first query, but I can confirm the above marriage is indeed on both FamilySearch and in FoD PRs.
Don't know how you use FS, I find their search engine is very much one of the "less is more" type, using minimal input (names and maybe England, or Glos, NOT Newland) and then filtering, FS has

Spouse's Name Mary Harrison

Richard NASH marrying in 1767
I found both marriages on FoD, not looking properly!
However, which Richard NASH was the son of Thomas NASH (possibly b c 1720) and the father of Richard NASH b 1779 because at the moment we have 2 possibilities for a Richard NASH marriage in 1767: the one who married Mary HARRISON in September or the one who married Elizabeth MORSE in November!
The Richard NASH buried in 1864 was 85 when he died, ie he was born in 1779, who married Mary James (no baptism yet) in 1809. Still have nothing to support a birthdate/baptism for Richard Nash in 1779 apart from the one at Cowley, which I am sure is wrong (too far and parents Thomas/Elizabeth).
Thomas NASH born in 1700s and his descendants
I think this Richard NASH was the one baptised 1779 was the one buried in 1864, FoD gives age 85).
I understand that the Richard NASH baptised 1774 died in 1829. His burial on FoD gives his residence as Coleford and his age as 55, ie a birth year of 1774, giving rise to another branch of the NASH family.
I think the Richard NASH baptised 1779 (no FoD record) was the father of James Nash b1815, who had a son Thomas b1855, who is my great-grandfather.
Does anyone have anything to support a baptism date of 1779 for Richard NASH that was in the Forest.

The pattern of children of Thomas and Ann GILBERT in the early 18C at Newland hints that there may have been more than one marriage of Thomas to an Ann.

That Richard was quoted in the inquest by the 1841 royal commission looking into child labor practices, as recorded in their report of 1842:
SLING PIT IRON MINE, near COLEFORD, carried on by JACKSON and Co.
April 13, 1841.
No.45 Mr. Richard Nash, aged 32, Mining Agent to Messrs. Jackson and Co., Sling Pit Iron mine, near Coleford.
“I am a free miner, and let the Sling Pit to Messrs. Jackson and Co., who opened it. I took the Gale of the Crown. We employ 35 hands. There are three boys under 13 years of age, the youngest is nine. He is a billy boy and carries about 60 or 70 lbs. of ore down a steep descent to the horse way. He earns 1s. a day at piece work, under the miner who employs him. I fix the wages, and pay them. The other two boys sometimes cart the ore, and sometimes carry billies. They earn from 1s. 4d. to 1s. 6d. a day. I believe we have no young person over 13 and under 18 years of age. We work by shaft, 106 yards deep, and a steam engine. Our pit has no water as we are on a dry tump. We had bad air all last summer but are now cut down to some old workings, beyond the memory of man and this gives us a better circulation of air. Our boys are healthy. Iron mining is a great deal healthier work than coal cutting. One man had his leg fractured, about six months ago, by the fall of a large stone. No other accident has occurred during the whole five years that we have been working. I have lived always in the Forest, and my father and grandfather before me. They were real old miners. I remember things well 20 years ago and think there is a great improvement in the foresters since then. They are more civilised, and better taught, a sight. Two of our boys can read, the others can not. The two eldest go to a night school within 40 yards of the pit. They pay 6d. a week. The least boy is the son of a widow, who has nothing but what he earns, and has one small girl to support besides. He has no change of clothes but a clean shirt but wears the same on Sundays that he wears in the pit.”
Mem.- The above evidence contains an instance, among many I have met with, of the peculiar destitution of instruction, to which the children of poor widows are subject. Partly from want of means to pay even a small weekly contribution to the school, and partly from inability to procure clothing, such as they like them to appear in, among their less impoverished yoke-fellows. It is a curious fact connected with the Sling Pit, that in the old workings spoken of in the evidence, there was found an ancient shovel, made entirely of wood, but shod with iron. It fell to pieces on being touched.
Thomas NASH born in 1700s and his descendants
A number of us have been working on this puzzle for about a decade. The number of Richard Nashes make this tricky, and there are a number of gaps in the parish records.
Our opinion is that Richard NASH (b 1774 d 1829) is the Coleford baker, son of Thomas NASH (b c1748) and Ann HARPER (b c1751, married 14-May-1768 Newland). This Richard married Elizabeth WINTLE on 11-Dec-1806, though I just noticed that Richard’s condition is listed as a widower). His will (on Ancestry) also names his wife as Elizabeth.
We have never discovered proof of birth/baptism of Richard NASH (b c1779). If you look at the dates in the census of 1841, 1851, and 1861, and his burial record, it seems that his birth occurred between 1778 and 1781. This is the brother of my 4xG-grandfather John Nash (b c1775). This Richard NASH married Mary JAMES, as far as we can tell. Their older brother, another Thomas NASH (b c1772 d 1825), mentions them and another brother Samuel in his will. Interestingly, Thomas leaves his house and land (Old Clay Oak) to be split between “Mary the wife of Richard Nash” (we assume this is Mary JAMES) and “nephew John Junior,” we believe John NASH (b 1802 d 1881?, oldest child of my 4xG-grandfather John NASH b c1775).
Although our consensus is that Richard NASH (b c1779) is the son of Richard NASH (b c1746) and Mary HARRISON (b c1749 m 1767), there is a possibility that he is the son of Richard NASH (b c1740) and Elizabeth MORSE (b c1740 m 21-Nov-1767), parents of Ann (b c1774 m James Digwood) and Eleanor (b 16-jul-1776 m Thomas DAVIS). In his will of 1796 (on Ancestry), Richard NASH (b c1740) mentions a son Richard NASH, as well as his daughters Ann DIGWOOD and Eleanor (“Elinor”) DAVIS. We do not know the birth date of that son Richard NASH.
However, since the will of Richard NASH (b c1740) does not mention Richard’s brothers Thomas (c1772), John (c1775), and Samuel (b ???), and since the since the will of Thomas (c1772) mentions Richard and his brothers but NOT any sisters, and also since Richard NASH born c1779 and wife Mary JAMES and their descendants show up living amongst John NASH (b c1775) and his descendants, we tend to believe that Richard NASH (b c1779) is the son of Richard (b c1746) and Mary HARRISON (b c1749). Unfortunately, we don’t have conclusive evidence of this.
So, there are at least three NASH families living in the Newland area descending from the three NASH marriages of 1767 and 1768. We just aren’t sure exactly how/whether the two families of freeminers living in and around Sling and Clearwell (i.e., descendants of Richard NASH & Mary JAMES and those of Richard NASH & Elizabeth MORES) are related to the bakers and maltsters of Coleford (the descendants of Thomas NASH & Ann HARPER).

Found this interesting. I believe my great grandparents to be Thomas Nash and Elizabeth Archer. One of their daughters was Eleanor Mary Nash and her sister was Muriel, your grandmother.
I visited Muriel when I was a child and met her son Chris Morgan who worked for the BBC. Eleanor married a William Henry Mason and had three children, the second one, Clement Geoffrey (names after Clements Tump), being my father. He was a Doctor in Bristol, where I was born.
Further information available but not much of the earlier connections.
