1852 riots (General)

Hi - I am wondering if anyone can give me any more information about the riots that ocurred on 17th July 1852 around ? Ross. I think they were to do with elections. I have a copy of a letter that describes how fearful they were and I would love to know more about the context. Thank you - Flissie.
