James MAYWELL - Charlotte HOOPER Family Bible (General)
I have just revisited an old Bible I have on my shelves. I acquired it so long ago that I cannot remember where or when. I guess it was at a jumble sale or the suchlike in Newent. It is in a somewhat distressed condition but all the text is there.It retains a pressed flower, and a scrap of fabric as a bookmark.
On the first page of Genesis is written “Charlotte HOOPER 1846”. I imagine this was the date she was given the bible.
Before the New Testament is written,
James MAYWELL born August 28th 1829
Charlotte HOOPER born February 8th 1834
Married September 19th 1857
Mary Jane MAYWELL born October 11th 1858
William MAYWELL born September 5th 1865, Died May 24th 1866
This is some of their history.

Wow, great post Mike, and lovely to try to get your Bible back with the family. I guess the best chance is to find descendants of Mary Jane MAYWELL born 1858. I appreciate this site isn't aimed at finding living relatives, but I hope we can help point the way, if there is one.
There are just 2, yes two, Maywell PRs within this site's database, but I'm pleased to find our target;

Thanks for that Jeff. To add a little more to the 1911 Census they were, by then, living in Station Road in Newent itself. Previously they had been at The Scarr a couple of miles north of Newent. Station Road is properly Bridge Street but it was often referred to as the former.

Oops, thanks for clarifying the precise address details Mike.
I've actually been adding to my original post while you made yours which I didnt see until now. Using my free month's access to The Genealogist website I'd found those address details, I wouldn't have bothered using that site as don't like the format, but for some odd reason I'd struggling to find the 1891 Census of FamilySearch.
As it seems you're familiar with Newent (I'm NOT !) - am I correct in guessing there are still PARRYs in the town, if only because it's a fairly common surname across the whole area ?
Cheers J

I can think of only one PARRY during my school days, from Hartpury. There used to be plenty in the Huntley/Blaisdon area in the 19C - I even have one in my tree albeit on the left hand side. I guess they must still be around but I've been away a long long time and couldn't even guess at the present situation.

Searching for Worsfold/Parry births on FreeBMD shows no likely offspring to Frederick Worsfold and Gertrude Parry after their aforementioned 1917 marriage.
Perhaps not surprising seeing as the PR states Frederick was a "retired widower", and Gertrude was aged 34.
Searching for possible births of Frederick J Worsfolds on FreeBMD suggests he's from the Greater London, South East England area, with a few records to choose from. FamilySearch confirms;
1911 Newent, Cliffords Mesne Newent, Gloucestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Frederick James Worsfold Head M 55 RETIRED COMMERCIAL CLERK. London Battersea, London
Sarah Ann Worsfold Wife F 49 Shillington, Bedfordshire

Hence;

WORSFOLD Frederick James Wandsworth 1d 412
So by time of his marriage to Gertrude he was aged abt 61.
Sadly it seems it was a short marriage, this is the only Death Record I can find anywhere that might be him;

Taking a different tack, I looked on Ancestry for any trees including James Maywell and there is one public one and a couple of private ones. The public one has some living descendants listed so I've sent a message to the owner to see if they can help. I'll let you know if I get anything.

Cheers Mike, and a good full set of Records for him for a change. Re the possibility of the brothers serving in the War, I checked this site's database but no luck, similarly my check of the CWGC site suggested neither were killed.
So it does seem possible Jame's early death was due to the War. And as a bonus you found sister Gertrude too, excellent.
Have you looked for Herbert in the 1939 Register ?
Nothing certain but this is the nearest Death record I can find to fit him, age fits and not too far away;

Hello Mike,
I am a descendant of James Maywell and Charlotte Hooper (paternal GG grandparents). I am very interested in this bible, and I have siblings and second cousins who would also be interested in this. My grandmother Alice Minnie Parry (daughter of John Parry and Mary Jane Maywell) was born in Newent and emigrated to Canada in 1914. Mary Jane Maywell was a daughter of James Maywell and Charlotte Hooper.
I have asked a Peter Robinson (ancestry.com communication) to forward my email to you, so we may communicate more directly.
Thanks,

Alice sailed on the SS Scotian, built in 1898 at Harland & Wolff's of Titanic fame. This page has photos and a detailed history of her interesting life, which includes several mentions of voyages twixt London and Montreal between 1911 and 1914, I think this was Alice's voyage. The passenger count is only 1/3 of previous trips, odd..
"10 July 1913 sailed London to Quebec and Montreal with 362 passengers. Captain B Henry was the ship's Master."
I think this must be her burial, in 1960. The fact that our new forum member "Alice M" aka Dianne Wilson of Saskatchewan is her Grand-daughter appears to confirm this.

Hello Dianne,
As soon as we can establish direct contact and somewhere to dispatch it to I will send it on its way. It’s not large – about five inches by three – and I suspect it may have been given to Charlotte on her Confirmation. It’s in more or less the same condition as when I acquired it – the front cover and most of the spine is missing but everything else is there, including the Epistle Dedicatory which you don’t often find in modern bibles. I suppose that after at least 173 years some kind of wear might be expected.
