Briscoe (General)
by Peter, Friday, September 02, 2005, 15:02 (7014 days ago)
I am researching William Briscoe and have a family line from William b1795 in Ireland and Married to Johanna Aylward b c1803 in Ireland through to his son William b c1825 and who was a forest keeper at Sallow Vallets Lodge. My intest now is tracing William's 2 wives Sofia Mountjoy b c1825 and Mary Anne Thomas b 1821 and who was the sister of Sofia. Mary Ann married John Thomas b1847 and they married about1853 and I think he died about 1858.
Mary Ann had 2 daugthers. Elizabeth SM Thomas appears to have had 8 children in 10 years all? registered as Thomas including my grandfather Owen, but were all living with William at Sallow Vallets but appear on the 1901 census as Briscoe. Does anybody who the father was, the birth certificate for Owen has no father registered. Werethey adopteded by William when Elizabeth died

Is this the same James Mountjoy and Maria Blake posted 5th July 2005 by Slowhands. Does anybody know if there is any relationship between James and William Mountjoy.
Also Is there any relationship between either of these two and Joseph Thomas Mountjoy who married Elizabeth Ann Briscoe and emigrated to New Zealand

Your 1901 Census entry includes an Owen Briscoe.
My main area of research is the Marfell family.
I have an Owen Briscoe who married Bernice Lily Marfell at Westbury on Severn Register Office on 3.2.1909. The marriage certificate shows him as being 19 his father William Briscoe a deceased Gamekeeper. Address shown as Hazel Hill, East Dean. Owen & Bernice had 4 children Irene, Kathleen, Minnie & Nancy. I would like to know if this is the same Owen.

The 1891 entry ( transcribed above) has William Briscoe as Woodman and Crown Keeper,.... ( beginning to look like a good match !)
Hawthorns and Hazel Hill are opposite sides of the Road just north of Drybrook

Thanks for your quick respones. Yes on the face of it the occupation and location make for a good match, but the age gap does not; Owen Robinson Briscoe was born abt. 1890 and the William in the above census was born 1826.
I have not been able to locate the Owen shown in your 1901 Census or his brothers and sisters in the 1891 Census for Gloucestershire. Whilst Hazel Hill, Harry Hill, Ruardean, Drybrook, Hawthorns etc, are to be found for the same person in subsequent census, this is not the case with Hope Mansell.

I think this is his BMD ref, in later life he took on the BRISCOE surname, and kept Robinson.
The first post on this stream puts this in context , and also asks other questions as yet unanswered - sadly they may never be.

Hi all
I initiated this thread and to start as way of explanation my mother is Nancy daughter of Owen Robinson Briscoe and Bernice Lily Marfell. I have had alot of help from alot of people.
As far as I can work out William Briscoe b1795 and Johanna Aylward came from Ireland and settled in Lattimer Lodge as Keeper for the Forest of Dean.
His son Williambecame keeper at Sallow Vallets Lodge and married Sophia Mountjoy and had 7 children. Sophia died about 1860 and William married Mary Ann Thomas sister to Sophia. She had 2 daughters by her first Husband John Thomas. Elizabeth Sophia Mountjoy Thomas and Mirah. Elizabeth had 8 children. I have the birth certificate for Owen R and it has no father listed.Elizabeth SM died in 1892 and i assume the children were adopted by William Briscoe, as they appear in the 1901 census as Briscoe's.
By the way I think the Robinson connection was Mary and Sophia's
mother 's maiden name.
I have been to FOD to look for for Sallow Vallets lodge and I also came across the tombstone for Timothy Marfell,Selina Ann Raymond Reginald and Winfred Alice.
Jim if you want all the details please feel free to e-mail me
Now I need help.
I have the Marriage certificate for Mary Ann Thomas and John Thomas. It shows he was a widower. Was he John Trotter Thomas and was he married to Ann Teague as one of the witnesses on the Marriage certificate was M A Teague?

Hi Peter
What a find, getting in touch with you. I am sure we can help one another and would like to be able to Email you direct, but not sure how we do this.
We are very closely related. I think we would be first cousins twice removed as my relationship to your mother is first cousin once removed.
My grandmather Jane Kate Marfell, was Bernice Marfells sister. I too have seen the tombstone and have a picture, I also have a picture of Timothy & family, which includes Bernice. I have Timothy's birth & marriage certificate, also as previously stated Owen Robinson Briscoe's marriage certificate. I would be happy to share photographs and certificates - I would like to see Owen's birth certificate.
From our great grand parents Timothy Marfell & Selina Ann Harber, I can go back a further 9 generations. I have 1450 Marfells in my Family Tree of almost 10,000 people.
The only Ann Teague I have in my Family Tree is one born 1781 who married Moses Marfell born 1774 in Newlands 19.8.1799
I arranged a Marfell "Gathering" in the Forest of Dean, which took place only last Saturday, and there met Winifred Irene Carpenter nee Marfell & Mary Alice Drabble nee Marfell, who are daughters of Raymond Reginald Timothy Marfell, brother of Bernice.
I look forward to hearing from you, perhaps the web master can pass on Email addresses. I am sure we can help each other.
Regards
Jim Ashton, Locking Village, Weston Super Mare, England
