Convict deportation (General)

by Jean Herbert @, Leeds Yorkshire, Sunday, May 11, 2008, 08:56 (6111 days ago)

Could anyone point me in the right direction to find information on George and William Phelps - possibly brothers but not certain. They were deported to Australia abt 1844 from Forest of Dean or area. Is there a link to any site where information can be found? Regards Jean Herbert

Convicts to Australia

I have just added this one to the Forest Links page for anyone that is interested. It is listed under the Miscellaneous category.

Charles Bateson's "The Convict Ships 1787-1868" is regarded as the definitive guide to Australia's period of transportation. Information is given about the voyages to New South Wales, Norfolk Island, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. It ranges from the life on board for both crew and convict, right through to records of deaths, numbers of convicts and the length of each voyage. A comprehensive index of the convict voyages has been extracted from Bateson's text and is presented on our convict shipping pages.

Thank you so much ChrisW. I remember Ancestry advertising the Convict database, but could not find it. Could you please tell me how you got into it? So grateful for your help, now to find the two lads. Regards Jean Herbert

William PHELPS Hartpury c1811 to Tasmania 1843

I have only just noticed this thread.

The William Phelps from Hartpury was charged, together with John Jones, of stealing two cock fowls and one hen fowl from John Newman of Hartpury. They were both convicted and sentenced to two months in Littledean.

I think you will have to look to one of the others for your transportation candidate.
