VOYCE family of Mitcheldean (General)
by velvetmoonchild1, Thursday, May 15, 2008, 05:53 (6107 days ago)
Hi everyone
I am researching my family tree and seem to have links to this family name through Mary Ann Voyce who married a Henry Barnfield from cranham. Mary Ann's father was Thomas Voyce from mitcheldean b 1777. Would love to hear about this family or if anyone has pictures relating to them. There seems to be quite a lot of them in this area so i think there must be a load of relatives out there waiting to find. Mary ann was my gggggrandmother ( I think) could be a few more g's to add ) Some census say clockmakers, cordwainers or labourers.
yours hopefully

Hi slowhands
Thanks for all this info
So far I think the parent line goes (btw... Fab site )
George Voyce (1640) married to a Mary (1644) both of mitcheldean they had two kids both named george ( is that normal ?) George 1 (1668) married a Mary(1672)They seemed to have ten kids one of them called nathaniel voyce(1699) who then married a Margaret(1703) they went on to have twelve kids !!! One of them was George Voyce(1744) who married a Sarah(havent got a d.o.b) they had nine children one of whom was Thomas Voyce(1777) who then married a mary who was from ireland they had four children, one of whom was mary ann Voyce who married Henry Barnfield from cranham and moved to the Gower Wales where they had nine children.
It does get a bit confusing when all the brothers and sisters called their kids the same names, can you imagine what a family get together would have been like, someone shouts GEORGE and ten people come running.
I have only just found this line of the family didn't realise the branch was so big!!!
Thankyou very much slowhands for your time and knowledge

George VOYCE 1756

I have done research on George Voice and Elizabeth Jenkins as I believe their son William c 1762 married Elizabeth Anderson 1790 and these I believe are the William and Elizabeth(Betty) named as the parents of my great x 4 grandfather Jonas Voice c 1797 at Newland. George and Elizabeth did have a son George Voice c1756 who married Sarah Beach, this George left a will in 1824 in which it mentions his wife Sarah and sons James, George and John. They did have a daughter Mary c 1778 who may have married a John Alldritt in 1805 although there is no mention of her in the will.
Getting further back than George has proved a problem, what are the chances that he changed his name? There is a Germanus Voice c 1732 at Newland the son of Germani and Elizabeth who are likely to be the German Voice and Elizabeth Watkins who married at Abbeydore, Here'sh in 1731. What I have thought is that Germanus maybe changed to George to have a name that fitted in more, is this common?

Hi,
You are confusing my research, but I am probably wrong. I have William Voice b.1772 marrying in 1790, Elizabeth Anderson. Ch. Harriett, Thomas, Jonas, Charlotte.
Jonas b. 1797 marrying Ann ? Ch. Jonas, Isabella, Harriett, Berry
Jonas b. 1826 marrying Elizabeth Morse in 1865. Ch. Goodwin, Rowland, Dessey,
Fanny, Lucy, Elizabeth, Jonas and Charles
(Fanny was my grandmother)
I have William Voice, b.1772 parents Edward Voce b.1740 married Sara Pickthorn in 1764. Ch.Betty, Sara, William.
I have only just joined this website and I think it is great. I am here in Australia, so, it is wonderful having all this information online.

Karen

Hi Karen,
I have just read your entry of 17/07/2008 and it is obvious that we are searching the same family. My grandmother was Winifred May Voice, 1888 of St Braivels, Glos. Her father was John Voice c. 1851 who married Emmeline Butler c. 1885. Her siblings were Thomas 1873, Emily 1875, Elizabeth 1877, Lily 1879, Laura 1881, Caleb 1883, Anne 1885, Lucy 1885, George 1889, Mabel 1891, Gertrude 1893, and Beatrice 1895.
Her G.father was Thomas Voice c.1825 who married Jane Worgan c. 1826,Her g.g.father was Thomas Voice c.1800 who married Anne unknown c.1801. Her g.g.g.father was William Voice c.1772 who married Elizabeth Anderson c. 1792. Her g.g.g.g.father was Edward VOCE (note different spelling) who married Sarah Pickthorn, c.1740. re Fanny your grandmother. I have her married to Demitrias Cheras c. 1846 - 1921 and having emigrated to Australia and had son Demetri. I ran out of your part of the family then.
My grandmother Winifred married my grandfather David John Goold, born Cinderford, Glos.
Like you I have only recently found this site, it's great isn't it? But I am totally confused by the huge number of Voices/Voyces and am failing to sort them all out.
Anyway I am certain that we have a connection and would be delighted to hear from you.
Regards Dave Goold
German / Germanicus

What I have thought is that Germanus maybe changed to George to have a name that fitted in more, is this common?
Given the biblical forenames of the period ( and it seems a very strong FoD tradition - wonder why non-conformism took hold in the Fod ?? ) I might speculate that the German is a shortened form of Germanicus - a Christian persecuted by the Romans
"GERMANICUS, AN EMINENTLY PIOUS MAN, DEVOURED BY THE BEASTS, AT SMYRNA IN ASIA MINOR, FOR THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST, A. D. 170"
Martyr of Smyrna. He was thrown to wild animals in a local amphitheater. When the beasts did not attack, Germanicus provoked them into attacking, gaining the admiration of the pagans of the arena.

A few years ago I went to a clock maker in Cheltenham and in his basement he had a collection of "Voyce" clocks he was restoring for a collector who was also a Voyce. The Collector was purchasing Voyce clocks as they came on to the market and the clock maker was very knowledgeable about the clocks. There is a book on the clockmakers of Gloucestershire, I don't have a copy, but it is possible you may find out about the Voyce clocks in it
