Phelps, George b1819 FoD d3 March 1864 at Carwell, NSW Aust. (General)

Hi,

I am searching for information on George Phelps, and his parents William and Anna (Bullock).

(please note, that this posting relates to Jean Herbert's 'convict records' posting. I have already collected the information from there - thanks to Jean and all the respondents).

I have George's death certificate, and the birth certificate of his son James Nevell.

From these certificates we know that George was:
b. 1819 (possibly 16 May) at Forest of Dean (no more detail - and I am learning just how big the FoD is!!)
m. 26 Sept. 1853 at Sofala, NSW, Australia (near Bathurst) to Mary Hawker (nee Vincent Nevell)
d. 3 March 1864 at Carwell, NSW, Australia (also near Bathurst)

we also know that his father was William Phelps (occupation farmer) and mother was Anna (nee Bullock).

It is possible that George was a convict, and that he arrived with a brother.

I have found the records for one George Phelps who was tried at the Gloucester Duaster (?) Sessions on June 27 1843 and sentenced to 10 years. He was transported to Tasmania (Van Diemens Land) on the Lord Auckland.

He was granted a conditional pardon between 1834 and 1859 (presumably July 1849) after spending 6 years 1 month in the colony. He was still in Tasmania in 1849 (based on the Ledger records).

I have ordered all the convict records that one can obtain from the Tasmanian Archives. There is a 6 week waiting list, so it will be a while before I know the crime this George committed, and what he looked like.

There was a George Phelps in Glos. in the 1841 census:

Surname First Name Age Place Box Piece Folio
PHELPS George 20 RUSPIDGE 3 364/9 36

This is prior to the convict George being tried, so I believe it could be the same one. (There were many other George Phelps' in the census, but none the right age).

I have not been able to find George in the BMD yet, but I do not know the geography of the FoD so I may be looking in the wrong parish/hundred.

We also do not have any BMD information for William and Anna. I have found a few marriages between William Phelps and Anna/Hanna, but not Bullock. Is it possible that Anna was on her second marriage, and not recorded as Bullock? Are there many variations on the name of Bullock?

My family and I are travelling to the FoD in August to try and trace George, William and Anna - and hopefully go back a bit further. I was hoping to find as much information as possible before we arrive, so that we can look in the right areas. We could spend a long time visiting every parish church cemetery, otherwise!

Thanks in advance for any information that can be provided.

In particular, I wish to extend many thanks to Jean Herbert for getting me started in these postings.

Additional information:
I have found some William and Anna Phelps' in the 1841 census (I would think that the only possibilities are the 40-60 age bracket):
