Have you tried querying with Geoff Gwatkins about his maps of this area?
See http://www.forest-of-dean.net/?Landowners_Names
They are for periods around 1840-1850 but show land and property ownership at this time and are fabulously detailed and interesting. A listing and print costs £5.50. Obviously your ancestor would not have had so much time to build up his property portfolio and business but this could still show how things were developing.

Thanks for the info, the years you mentioned may help more with Samuel's Father Thomas who left Samuel a House and land in Mill Hill Bream c1845. Samuel lived in Monmouthshire and worked in the Mines there, between 1838 and 1851. He then returned to Bream to live and work.

With reference to Samuel Jenkins.
My mother currently lives in a house which we believe was built by Samuel Jenkins
in Bream. My grandfather purchased the house plus two others from John Jenkins,
son of Samuel in 1919. We have the deeds showing that these three houses were left to John by his father Samuel in 1891.

Thanks, for replying, thats great news. Would it be possible to have a copy of these deeds? In Samuel's Will it states that these houses are in Mill Hill, Bream, are they the ones that his son John sold?

Samuel Jenkins born 1839 Pontypool

by Keithtug @, Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 15:25 (4212 days ago) @ alison2

Hi,
I'm trying to trace the family of Samuel Jenkins, born Pontypool, Monmouth 1839. Father Samuel Jenkins. In 1861 (aged 22) he was a Coal Miner and was a lodger in the house of Mariane? Jenkins (Born in Bream) at Dark Hole, West Dean. She was a widow aged 65 and a Landed Proprietor. Was she related to Samuel or was it just a coincidence.
Samuel later moved to Leeds in Yorkshire where he married Sally Boulton in 1864, and after her death, married Elizabeth Joy in 1883 at Charlestown, Baildon, Yorks.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards,
Keith

Looking at Gloucestershirebdm - think Mary Anne's maiden name was GAY

(Bitton/Oldland - is quite close and some of my tree, say born Bitton, christened Oldland)

Samuel JENKINS/Mary Anne GAY?

Thanks M P Griffiths,
that's very useful. It looks like Samuel's father (also Samuel) married twice, as in the 1841 census Mary, his mother is shown as the same age (25), but by the 1851 census her name is now Mary Anne, and she is shown as 9 years younger! Also in the 1841 census living in the same house is a Samuel GREEN (aged 6 months, who does he belong to?
Thanks again for your help.

Keith

The birth certificate of Samuel JENKINS

would give his mother's maiden name.

Samuel JENKINS seems to be well documented on National Archives A2A (held at Gloucestershire Records Office)

'Deeds and related papers concerning properties in Yorkley and Bream owned by Samuel JENKINS, Colliery Proprietor, including site of Bream Parkend Road Chapel - 1841-1949 - etc etc'

Looking at some of the births on Fod Records - the family appear to be non-conformists.

From Ian Pope's truly excellent Lightmoor FoD Coalmining site, I presume this is the same Samuel, within the detailed history of the Bailey Hill Level:

"1 August 1887 Agreement Roger Whittle, Yorkley Hill, colliery proprietor and Samuel Jenkins of Bream. Whittle agrees to let Bailey Hill Colliery, upon which he holds a lease, to Samuel Jenkins. Jenkins to have free use of machinery and plant. To pay £30 per year.

28 April 1897 Samuel Jenkins died."

See http://www.lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/CoalBaileyHill.html

He is also listed within the following Trade Directories:

JENKINS Samuel, coal master. Princess Royal colliery

Interesting to look at historical inflation. £701 1892 is equivalent of £70,000 today. My GGrandfather died 1901 and left £281 equivalent of £29,319 today. But that was mainly his house which today is worth between £300,000 and £400,000. A brother of my Grandfather left £1,351 in 1929 equivalent of £72,612 today.

Samuel was quite wealthy, as well as 2 Coal mines he owned land and Houses, enough houses for each of his children to inherit one. I have a copy of his will, makes very interesting reading.

Thank you so much everybody!
You have all given me lots of information about the Jenkins side of my family, which I can add to my records and my family tree. I am connected to the Jenkins family through the Joy family (my mothers maiden name), and never expected such a response to my post! I have lots to investigate now.
It seems strange, but I have spent a couple of holidays at Ruardean, so I must have been drawn there!

re Samuel JENKINS will

by janethowell, Sunday, June 22, 2014, 18:18 (3877 days ago) @ alison2

Does his will mention any of his siblings?

Most of his brothers are dead or emigrated to US or NZ by the time he dies but younger brothers James and Shadrach are still in Bream - at least Shadrach was and was involved with the Bream chapel site which Samuel seems to have given to the chapel.
