Latin Name - Salis (General)
I am transcrbing Latin burial records and have come across the above name as husband of a deceased wife. Can anyone suggest what this should be in English

Salt = Salis
Willow = Salix
not a lot of help I suspect ;-)
With a grain of salt is a translation of Latin cum grano salis

Hi Slowhands
Knew it meant Salt but hardly think this was his name, also aware of Salix as I am a Horticulturist. But thanks for the thought.

Could it be Silas rather than Salis, perhaps?
Man of the Forest
Silas / Silvanus -- of the woods ( very good !)
I'd love to see a scan of the Record

The conclusion was that it was "Samlis" and later context resolved this as Samuel
