These were ordered to be kept from 1598 when the clergy were required, within a month of Easter, to send transcripts of the registers for the previous year to the bishop of their diocese. After 1837, when civil registration started, many clergy ceased to send copies, although some did continue for quite some time.
Eventually the BT's will get added time, and volunteers goodwill permitting :-)

Have just picked up this thread. I think Mary Howell (1751) is also in my tree - parents james Howel and Sarah? Can't find any trace of Sarah or of their marriage. Possibly 4 children - Sarah (b 1743), Samuel (b 1745), James (b 1748) and Mary (b 1851) all from St Briavels parish Records. If this is the same Mary I think she may have married Richard Edwards of Shirenewton in 1770.
