I am seeking more information on my Brain family from Yorkely / Viney Hill ? Pillowell areas.

This is the information I currently have...

William Brain (died bef 1841) married Ann b. approx 1804 d. 1888 buried in Viney Hill(possible marriage Ann Kear 24 Sept 1825 Newland)

Their son Absalom Brain b.1828 d.1907 (Absolom) Brain is my GGGgrandfather. He married Frances Elizabeth Kear b.1844.

Other sons of William & Ann Brain are Thomas and William.

Children of Absalom and Frances Brain are:
Lydia b. 1863, Thomas 1867, Louisa 1871, William 1874, Grantley 1875, Lorenza 1878 and Emma 1880.

Loisa married Edmund Arblaster and is buried at Viney Hill.

Any connections information or advice gratefully recieved as I am a "Brain" family member too and would love to get further back with this family.

Whilst working in a coalpit at Parkend, he was cautioned of the danger of a quantity of projecting coals, but he disregarded the advice and continued his work, till suddenly the whole mass fell on him.

Further along in time Williams grandson Thomas Brain b. 1867 in Pilowell (son of Absalom Brain) died in a mining accident at Trafalgar Colliery Mosely Green acording to family information.

My grandfather can remember his father telling him about the accident which took place sometime before 1920. Any ideas how I might find out more acout this accident?

Deceased worked in a place 7.5 feet wide, in a seam of coal 2 feet 8 inches in thickness, having a hard sandstone roof full of joints and slips. He was sitting a few yards from the face while his marrow threw back some lying coal, when a stone 6 feet long, 5 feet wide at centre, and 3 feet thick at one end, tapering to a feather edge at the other, suddenly fell from the roof, reeling out four props. Deceased was dead when got out. The place had been well timbered with props carrying thick lids, and had been examined by the overman and reported safe three hours prior to the accident.

Very few remains of Howbeach colliery are to be found. The main shaft of the mine was situated to the South of the Blakeney to Parkend road near Moseley Green. There are a few masonry blocks on an otherwise fairly level open area beside the road (SO 6388 0878) .

I've come accross this marriage and noticed the birth of Ann on the parish records on this site yesterday evening.

I know it's difficult to be certian, but it seems to me on the available information that this is a very likely marriage and birth for my Ann & William. How certain do you think I can be and what further information might I get to verify this?

Also - I was rather hoping the marriage record might give more info about grooms and brides father. Is there usually more information than this.

That's so helpful - can you tell me where your info is from. Also - where is Howbeach Colliery? Is it near Mosely Green as Grandad is quite sure that's where his grandfather died.

Yes, it was nr Moseley Green - ironically Howbeach closed in the 1920's

The Forest of Dean Local History Society have produced a CD which is part of the Miners Memorial Project and contains records of fatal accidents which occured in Forest of Dean Mines in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It also includes details of Free Miners and Free Quarrymen who registered prior to 1960.

I have William Brain & Ann Kear in my family tree, due to my plotting siblings & parents of spouses, which I sometimes take too far as information becomes available.

My interest is in connection with William Brain & Ann Kear's GGG Grandson (via Absalom) Royston Hubert Brain born Pillowell 21.11.1924 marrying Joyce Mary Evans born 12.7.1922, daughter of Arnold Evans & Doris Emma Roberts who are related to me.

I had the children of William Brain & Ann Kear as Absalom 1829, William 1830, Thomas 1840 & Edmund 1846.

I am therefore in difficulty understanding the death of William occurring in 1832, I am not aware that they had the technology in those days to produce children so long after their death. So perhaps I have got it wrong somewhere !!

If the death is correct, who was the father ?

I have the father of Absalom as William Brain, and see from later census details that William & Thomas have joined the family. I don't however have information that William is their father. Perhaps Ann married again?

looks like the DNA may be that of Thomas Morgan !
