George GIBBS born Mitcheldean about 1828 (General)

by rickandsheila, Saturday, November 15, 2008, 02:08 (5924 days ago)

I am trying to find any record of the death of George Gibbs baptised Mitcheldean 28 March 1828. He married his second wife Prudence COLLINS, nee HARRIS, at Westbury on Severn on 28 September 1873. By the 1881 census at Worral Hill, Westdean, Prudence is shown as a widow. I can find no matching death on FreeBMD between 1873 and 1881. Can anyone help?

I am also trying to identify George's grandfather. FOD parish records show his father, also named George GIBBS, was baptised 8 March 1797 at Mitcheldean giving his parents' names as William GIBBS and Molly. I can find no marriage record for William GIBBS and Molly, but there is a marriage recorded in the FOD parish records for William GIBBS and Mary THACKWELL 19 December 1774 at Longhope. There are 6 children baptised by William and Mary between 1778 and 1794. I understand that Molly is an 18th century pet name for Mary, so is it possible that Mary and Molly are one and the same? Can anyone help me make the connection please.

George GIBBS born Mitcheldean about 1828

by rickandsheila, Sunday, November 16, 2008, 06:56 (5923 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you, Slowhands, for all your efforts. I think that I have the right George married to both Lydia MATTHEWS and Prudence COLLINS. On both certificates his father's name is shown as George GIBBS, a mason. The other George GIBBS shown on the 1841 census was the son of a William GIBBS a papermaker. You certainly made me think how I came to that decision.

I still cannot find any record of George's death between 1873 and 1881.

The William GIBBS and Mary THACKWELL parentage for George GIBBS baptised, 8 March 1797, Mitcheldean, seems plausible, but hopefully I might get some confirmation from another GIBBS researcher. Thanks once again.

Rick and Sheila - GIBBS Family Lydbrook

by unknown, Monday, April 04, 2011, 21:08 (5053 days ago) @ rickandsheila

Hello there,

I recently did a search on some of my relatives from Lydbrook, Glos. My name is David Gibbs and I believe that I am a descendant of Prudence Gibbs (nee Collins), originally from Lydbrook.

I found a forum where users Rick and Sheila were also searching for a George Gibbs, 2nd husband of Prudence. Her son was Morgan Gibbs, my great grandfather.

I would very much like to contact them - perhaps we are distant relations?

David

I have Morgan Gibbs 1874 in my family tree, although I am not related to him and therefore not related to you, unless by subsequent relationships. I tend to follow the siblings and parents of spouses and sometimes go too far.

In this case Morgan Gibbs 1874 was the son of George Gibbs & Prudence Harris. Prudence Harris was baptised 10 Feb 1828 Drybrook, daughter of Richard Harris 1792/1875 & Sophia Roberts 1804/1836 **. Prudence Harris married James Collins 1821/1870 at Chistchurch 3 Dec 1848. James Collins died 2 Jun 1870 in an accident at Trafalgar Colliery : James was an Inclineman at Trafalgar Colliery, details of his death are recorded as "In attaching a loaded tram to a set the trigger slipped on a sleeper and the set backed and crushed him to death".

James Collins was the son of Jonathon Collins 1770/1853 & Martha Brakespear 1782/1838.

James Collins & Prudence Harris had 6 children including Sophia Collins 1860/1901 who married my Great Great Uncle George Treherne born 19 Jun 1857, one of the 3 illegitimate children of my Great Great Grandmother Charlotte Treherne 1820/1890 - George committed suicide 11 Mar 1913.

Rick and Sheila - GIBBS Family Lydbrook

by unknown, Wednesday, April 06, 2011, 14:51 (5052 days ago) @ jimashton

Thank you so much Jim!

You have saved me endless hours of research with this information.

I have always regarded myself as being 110% Welsh - I even speak Welsh! - but growing up was aware that my grandfather Morgan Gibbs (born Nov 1911) had a Forest of Dean connection.

His father, another Morgan Gibbs, was the son of Prudence Gibbs, although Morgan appears as Morgan Collins on the 1901 and 1911 census. The name change has confused the hell out of me.

The family clearly left the Forest between 1901 and 1911 to move to Pontypool in South Wales (where I come from), to work in coal mining. Any idea why? I understand Lydbrook has a history of coal mining, despite being a sleepy village today.

Any idea also who Rick and Sheila are? I have met a Sheila Gibbs a few years ago (before I got into this family history stuff!) and I know she is a relation of mine.

Anyway, thanks again for your time and effort. It is really appreciated.

Diolch yn fawr iawn,

David G.

Hi, my name is Richard Collins, Prudence Collins/Gibbs was my great great grandmother. I have done a lot of research into her and her offspring. Morgan Gibbs was her child from her second marriage, he died in 1917 (Prudence only died in 1916) and is buried in Abersychan, somewhere I have a copy of his funeral card - I'll look for it if you are interested.
Like you (thinking you were Welsh) I thought we were a forest family through and through but my Collins line only came to the forest when Prudence and James married, he was from Berkshire. This is addictive stuff!

Jim,
James and Prudence Collins were my great grandparents so I have been piecing the Collins family genealogy together for some years now. That has included a certain amount of tracking of James' and Prudence's children forward in time. I'm interested in your information on George Treherne. I had found his death transcribed by FreeBMD in the range of Jan-Mar 1913, and his burial record for 15 Mar 1913 can be found at the Forest of Dean website. (These are in perfect agreement with your date of his suicide, 11 Mar 1913.) Both record his age as 52. The various censuses in which he appears are also consistent with this age, and his birthplace is given as Bream, Gloucestershire.
All this information fits reasonably well with a birth transcription for a George Treherne in FreeBMB in the range Jan-Mar 1860 [Newent 6a, 232] (although that's not exactly Bream!) but it could also be consistent with the birth of a George Trehern (no e) in the range Jul-Sep 1857 [Monmouth 11a, 21] (which does include Bream). Neither agrees exactly with your date of his birth, 19 Jun 1857, however.
Since you have exact dates, mother's name and cause of death, you obviously have more detailed information than I've been able to track down. Can you give me some guidance to finding it too or does it come from family records of some sort?
John Hardy

Rick and Sheila - GIBBS Family Lydbrook

Hello David,
Prudence Harris Collins Gibbs was my greatgrandmother. Her son Isaac Collins (with her first husband, James Collins) was my grandfather. I have only followed the Gibbs line forward as far as Morgan Gibbs' marriage to Elizabeth Russell. From this message string I see that I probably didn't get farther because Morgan chose to take the Collins name for a few decades.
I have tried unsuccessfully to follow Prudence's line backward beyond her father and mother, Richard Harris and Sophia Roberts. There is a possibility that Richard was Richard Dobbs Harris the "base born son" of Hannah Harris but I can't be sure. I also haven't been able to determine for sure the date of Richard's death. Do you have any leads that could help?

Hi John,

I have sent you a private message via the e-mail system.

To go back to the original posting from Rick and Sheila in 2008, there is a death of a George Gibbs (a stonemason) in Abergavenny in the Apr-Jun quarter of 1877. This may be Prudence Collins' last husband.

David

I too would be interested in the parentage of Sophia Roberts 1804 as I have 364 Roberts in my family tree and it would be nice to turn a "connected" person into a relative.

Regarding the 1877 death, the date would make sense, her first husband James Collins died 2 Jun 1870, buried 5 Jun 1870 - An Inclineman he was killed in Trafalgar Colliery - In attaching a loaded tram to a set, the trigger slipped on a sleeper and the set backed and crushed him to death.

Prudence was therefore head of house in 1871 as James Collins had died the year before, she married George Gibbs 28 Sep 1873, but she was head of house again in 1881.

George Treherne 1857 - re locked thread - George Gibbs

by jimashton @, Sunday, August 28, 2011, 16:32 (4908 days ago) @ rickandsheila

I have yet again been asked a question and cannot reply as the thread is locked and I have to ask again

WHY ?

The thread in question is :

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=15254

The nub of the question is :

George Trehern (no e) in the range Jul-Sep 1857 [Monmouth 11a, 21] (which does include Bream). Neither agrees exactly with your date of his birth, 19 Jun 1857, however.
Since you have exact dates, mother's name and cause of death, you obviously have more detailed information than I've been able to track down. Can you give me some guidance to finding it too or does it come from family records of some sort?
John Hardy
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

George Treherne 19 Jun 1857 is the illegitimate brother of my illegitimate Great Grandfather Walter Treherne born 8 Jul 1854. Both sons of Charlotte Treherne 1820/1890.

I had him wrong in my family tree until contact from my third cousin Linda Watkins nee Treherne. I am always happy to change my Family Tree to get it right. It was Linda who has the birth certificate for George Treherne born 19 Jun 1857 as shown in the thread which is linked to the one you replied to but is now LOCKED

George Gibbs - death in Monmouthshire, May 1877

by unknown, Monday, September 05, 2011, 20:43 (4900 days ago) @ jimashton

To clear up the original post by Rick and Sheila way back in 2008, there are two death certificates for a George Gibbs on 9th May 1877 (464) and 10th May 1877 (470) at Gas Cottages/Fairview in Abergavenny district.

I believe these may well be the same person, as No.464 says 'Reg instead at No.470' on the death certificate. The cause of death 'Heart Disease' and the Registrar's name is also the same. Age of death is 50yrs on both.

I cannot confirm 100% that this is George Gibbs from the FoD who married Prudence Collins, but his death date and occupation 'Stonemason' indicate that this may well be him. Prudence Gibbs was not present at his death.

Its over the Welsh border, but does anyone know anything about Gas Cottages/Fairview in Abergavenny today?
