Peter Jenkins 1841 - Court for relief of insolvent debtors (General)

My ancestors are listed in the London Gazette 1840 and 1841 as being insolvent debtors.

My 4xGGrandfather Peter Jenkins is recorded as being in Gloucester Gaol, 4th May 1841.

Can anyone advise me on further research to establish how my ancestors got into this situation and what they would have to do to resolve.
