THank you for setting the record straight.
I am a descendant of this family and the farm where Amelia was muderered is still occupied by members of the Phipps family. (The Butts also still live nearby)
Edward Butt absconded after shooting Amelia and went to stay with his brother in Abergavenny. He sent a letter to his home which was intercepted by Police and he was arrested and hung at Gloucester prison.
My family is still in possession of newspaper cuttings of the time.

I have just come across this forum and am very interested in knowing more of this story. I am descended from the family of Amelia and am extremely interested in any more information on the family of the Merritt's , James Merritt being mentioned as her Step brother. Does anyone know of any connections here? Does anyone also know about the London connections with the family?
